Winter and Outdoor Activities

Klais has a railway station built in 1912 at an elevation of 933 metres. From the station, visitors can explore the visible Roman road and nearby trails; cycling routes are also described in the surrounding area.

From Klais, you can cycle in the direction of Kranzbach and Elmau, with views of the Wetterstein Mountains. Longer extensions lead towards Ferchensee and Lautersee.

History

At the eastern edge of Klais, visitors can see and walk along a partially excavated section of the Roman Via Raetia. The road is dated to around AD 200; the wheel ruts of ancient vehicles are still visible.

The excavations at the Via Raetia in Klais also uncovered remains of a Benedictine foundation monastery connected with Scharnitz. Its existence is documented for the period from 29 June 763 to 772; a bronze plaque commemorates it.

A simple historical walk leads from Klais along the Roman road in the direction of Elmau. The local tourism organisation also promotes a tour in the area focusing on the history of Klais.
