Buchenau between Moorland and Glassmaking History
Accommodation in Buchenau
The Glass Trail leads through Buchenau, a former glassmaking village. Historical glass production is part of Buchenau’s history. In Buchenau, the history of glassmaking and moorland hiking come together.
Hike to Lindberger Schachten
The hike to the Schachten begins at the hiking car park in the centre of Buchenau and leads to Lindberger Schachten. A short ascent there offers a view of the Rachel massif with Kleiner Rachel and GroĂźer Rachel. For planning the day, you can schedule the short ascent as a separate section after setting off from the centre of the village.
Moorland, Boardwalk and Moor Lakes
The hike starting from Buchenau leads through the Zwieselter Filz, which is considered Germany’s largest saddle bog complex. One section runs along a boardwalk through the Zwieseler Filz. The route then continues through the Latschenfilz and past several small moor lakes to Latschensee. When preparing for the moorland section, you can consider the boardwalk, Latschenfilz, the moor lakes, and Latschensee as successive points of reference.
Return via Frauenau and Buchenau Castle
On the return journey, the hike passes the Frauenau drinking-water reservoir and Buchenau Castle before returning to the starting point. For planning in sections, the route through the moors and the return via Frauenau and Buchenau Castle can be considered separately. The circuit thus closes again at the starting point in the centre of Buchenau.
Trail Requirement in the National Park Core Zone
In the core zone of the national park, hikers on the Schachten route must stay on the designated trails. Marked paths must not be left there. Especially in winter, this trail requirement protects capercaillies that are sensitive to disturbance. For winter planning, the marked route therefore remains binding; shortcuts away from these paths are not part of the permitted route.
Buchenau Castle and Historical Glass Production
Buchenau Castle was built in 1840 by Benedikt von Poschinger. It belonged to the former Hilzenhütte, which was later renamed Buchenau. The castle is connected with Buchenau’s historical glass production. Today, a support association takes care of the castle grounds. The building’s history thus links Hilzenhütte, Buchenau, and historical glass production.
Garden Market with Wild Garlic Festival at the End of May
The garden market with its wild garlic festival takes place at the end of May and offers plants and handicrafts. For planning your visit, the end of May is the period when this market takes place. Anyone visiting Buchenau at the end of May can plan the market as a seasonal date alongside the hiking trails. The event therefore falls within a clearly defined period of the year.
Getting to the Starting Point
The starting point of the Schachten hike can be reached from Zwiesel railway station via Unterzwieselau by bus on Falkenstein Line No. 1. Those arriving without their own vehicle can use Zwiesel railway station, Unterzwieselau, and Falkenstein Line No. 1 as points of reference. The bus connection can be considered as a separate planning step before the tour begins. This allows the journey and the start of the tour to be prepared as separate steps in terms of timing.
