Marian Grotto and Parish Barn

Built in 1899, the Marian Grotto is located on the steep slope by Grottensteige. It is a place of peace and prayer. Regular May devotions and an annual candlelight procession are part of the religious tradition; the procession has been held since the 1960s. The grotto therefore offers a different focus from the parish barn, which hosts cultural events and theatre performances.

The listed parish barn was once an agricultural building belonging to the castle and has since been renovated. Its hall has a stage and a gallery. Since its inauguration on 31 July 1980, it has been used for cultural events, festivals and celebrations. Church History and Bible Garden

The origins of the parish church of St Stephen and Oswald are traced back to a cell church built by Frankish monks in the mid-8th century, three kilometres east of the Marian cell in Stöttwang. This tradition places Osterzell’s church history within an early monastic and settlement tradition. It provides a historical counterpoint to the event spaces in the parish barn that are in use today.

The Osterzell Bible Garden offers a different combination of faith and design. There, Bible verses are brought together with landscape architecture, works of art and a variety of plants. The garden is a place to pause and reflect. While the Marian Grotto is defined by its religious dedication, the Bible Garden combines texts with a designed landscape and art.

Natural Swimming Pool and Playground

At the Osterzell natural swimming pool, the water is biologically reprocessed using a regeneration pond, with more than 500 reed plants. Before visiting for a swim, it is advisable to check the seasonal operating conditions. This will help you plan your visit without assuming a specific opening time.

A public playground is located right next to the natural swimming pool. For toddlers, there is a slide and spring riders; for teenagers, there are table-tennis tables and a table football game. Since spring 2024, the grounds of the public playground by the natural swimming pool have also had a free public drinking fountain. The play options mentioned vary by age group and type of activity, ranging from playing on the slide and spring riders to table tennis and table football.

Cycling and the Ostallgäu

The Kleeblattrunde cycle route through the Ostallgäu runs from Rettenbach am Auerberg roughly along the Hühnerbach stream to Bidingen and Osterzell. If you include this route in your plans, check the route conditions before setting out. The route described offers a specific connection to cycle travel in Osterzell, without implying anything about walking times or other routes.

For winter sports, the wider Ostallgäu travel region provides a separate point of reference. There, the Alpspitzbahn Nesselwang cable car gives access to the downhill run around the 1,575-metre-high Alpspitz; the ski area offers family-friendly slopes and a ski children's area. Operating conditions in winter may vary seasonally.
