The Iller riverbank and natural surroundings
The Iller riverbank trail towards Hegge includes a shady section along the riverbank. This section of the trail runs by the water and is also oriented towards Hegge. When planning a route section close to the river, this part of the riverbank trail can be considered as a specific section. The Iller is present not only along the riverbank trail, but also in the history of the paper mill.
Easy cycling loop through Hegge
An officially designated, easy cycling loop for beginners follows a 25.98-km circular route that passes through Hegge twice. The route runs near Hegge Church and the Iller. It also passes Sulzberger See, which is also called Öschle-See, as well as Widdumer Weiher in the Allgäu Pre-Alpine landscape. The 25.98 km represent the total distance of the loop and can serve as a distance framework for planning the day. As a circular route, the trail follows a closed circuit; passing through Hegge twice is part of this route. The church and the Iller are close to the route, while Sulzberger See and Widdumer Weiher are additional bodies of water along the route. For planning the day, this total distance can be considered as a separate expenditure of time and energy.
Church and paper production
The foundation stone for the Church of “Mary, Queen of the Apostles” in Hegge was laid on Easter Monday 1950. The church was consecrated on 19 August 1951. The interior furnishings include an altarpiece by Arnulf Heimhofer and works by the sculptor Hans Wachter.
Paper production is also part of the history of the town. The paper mill on the Iller developed into an important paper supplier beyond the region in the second half of the 19th century. The paper factory in Hegge was closed after 563 people had been employed there shortly beforehand. The history of paper thus connects the location on the Iller with the paper factory in Hegge and extends from the paper mill to the closed factory.
