Ebni combines Lake Ebnisee with a variety of opportunities for a stay between lake, nature and history. When choosing accommodation in Ebni, you can plan your visit according to whether swimming and boating, an almost level lakeside path, a natural monument or the Roman past should be the main focus.

Lake, Shore and Leisure

Lake Ebnisee lies in a valley between Ebni and Kaisersbach. It covers around 6.7 hectares, is up to approximately 5 metres deep and is fed mainly by the Sommerbach, which flows into the lake on its northern shore. The lake is used for swimming. It also offers opportunities for rowing and pedal boating. Walks along the lakeshore, barbecuing at designated barbecue areas and relaxing on the sunbathing lawns round off the range of activities around the water.

This means that Lake Ebnisee offers various ways to spend the day, without all travellers having to choose the same focus. While swimming or a boat trip focuses the stay directly on the lake, walks along the shore and breaks on the sunbathing lawns offer a more leisurely pace. Designated barbecue areas are available for barbecuing. The activities offered by “Ebnisee für Alle” are free of charge.

The Trail Around Lake Ebnisee

The trail around Lake Ebnisee is approximately 1.7 kilometres long and almost level. On the eastern side, it is paved. Apart from a small incline, the trail can be easily navigated with a pushchair or wheelchair. For your planning, the specific route is therefore particularly important: The almost level stretch is suitable for a circuit around the water, while the small incline and the partially varying surface should be taken into account.

Nature Experience by the Lake

The “Gall Grotto” natural monument is located in the surroundings of Lake Ebnisee. It can be reached from the northern lakeshore via a wonderfully wild path. The route to the Gall Grotto therefore differs considerably from the circuit around the lake: The focus here is not on a level lakeside path, but on a trail leading to a natural monument in the surrounding area.

Hiking in the Footsteps of the Romans

Another option is the “From Lake Ebnisee to the Limes World Heritage Site” hike. It follows the traces of the Roman frontier and partly runs along the old boundary wall. Along the route, you pass the remains of watchtowers and a former small fort. Several information panels provide insights into the lives of the Romans on the border with Germania. Visitors who would like to combine a hike with historical content therefore have a clearly defined theme available alongside the lake activities.

Ebni Between Glassmaking History and Local Recreation

The name of the district of Ebni also probably points to a historical connection: It is presumably linked to medieval glassmaking. The name may have originated from the flattening of glass, which was initially blown as a hollow vessel. These cautious formulations are important in this interpretation of the name, as neither the connection with glassmaking nor the possible derivation is regarded as a certain explanation.

Lake Ebnisee was first dammed in the winter of 1745/1746. From 1884 onwards, it was permanently dammed. This initially marked the beginning of modest tourism around the lake, which over the following decades developed into a local recreation destination that remains popular today. Since 2008, “Ebnisee für Alle” has also been held as an inclusive event around Lake Ebnisee over three days between May and August.

During a stay in Ebni, you can therefore choose between different focuses, including the lakeshore, circular trail, nature path, event and historical hike. If you would like to include other destinations in your travel plans alongside Ebni, you can also find Rudersberg, Murrhardt and Alfdorf here.
