Geology and Landscape

The Meteor Crater Museum in Sontheim presents the meteorite impact, its effects, and life around the Miocene Steinheim Lake. It also displays fossilized plants and animals preserved in the sediments of the crater lake. Scientific supervision is provided by the staff of the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart. The Crater-to-Crater Cycle Route also begins here, connecting the Nördlinger Ries and the Steinheim Basin.

The geological educational trail can be completed in its entirety over 9 kilometers or explored in two sections of 6 kilometers and 3 kilometers. The Wental is a dry valley whose bizarre dolomite rocks were shaped by a former river. The interactive Wental educational trail begins in Steinheim and leads through the Wental to the Landhotel Wental in Essingen.

Culture and History

The Heimatstube in the monastery courtyard preserves local customs, demonstrates traditional handicraft techniques, and safeguards historical exhibits. It displays traditional costumes, tools, and memorabilia belonging to expellees from Neudorf and Weindorf who settled in Steinheim. You can also visit a preserved old forge and the monastery kitchen there.

Cycle Routes and Other Fossil Sites

After reaching Nördlingen, the Crater-to-Crater Cycle Route returns to Steinheim via the crater rim and the Children's Festival grounds. At the Steinheim Schneckensand outcrop near the edge of town, you can discover fossil snails and trace their development using an information board.
