Trails through nature and local history

The Limburg Nature and Cultural Heritage Trail has led through Limburg’s orchard meadows since autumn 2004. The route is around three kilometres long and includes eleven information boards. Using examples from the immediate area, they explain scientific, cultural and historical, and ecological connections. The trail thus combines a specific route length with several information stops. If you enjoy learning more about nature and culture while out and about, the boards provide a guiding thread; at the same time, the route’s approximate length makes it easy to plan as a separate leg of your trip.

The old-town trail has a different focus: it passes 20 buildings with information boards about the town’s history or the history of their architecture and takes about an hour. The emphasis here is on the history of the buildings within the townscape. The time given provides a rough guide for this walk; for the nature and cultural heritage trail, by contrast, the key detail is its length of around three kilometres. The two trails therefore offer different ways to include nature-related topics or local history in your stay.

For longer hikes or walks with varying levels of difficulty, 14 signposted circular trails are available in Weilheim and Hepsisau. One of them is suitable for wheelchair users. Depending on the level of difficulty, the circular trails are 2.2 to 11.9 kilometres long, with elevation differences of 65 to 315 metres. Length and elevation difference are two separate comparison points: these ranges give an overview of the different trail dimensions without reducing every route to a single figure. This lets you take both distance and elevation gain into account when choosing a trail.

Culture and events

St. Peter’s Church in Weilheim an der Teck features valuable wall paintings from the 15th century. This religious art provides a distinct cultural and historical highlight alongside the architectural and town history featured on the old-town trail. If you’re interested in historical art, this is another aspect to consider as you explore Weilheim.

The Weilheim artists’ market, “Spring Awakening in the Little Town,” is an annual event. It takes place over two days at the end of March. Numerous selected artists present works they have made themselves in their studios and workshops, using a variety of materials. If the market plays a role in your travel plans, keep an eye on the specific dates for the year in question: the end-of-March timing and two-day duration are given, but the exact dates vary from year to year.

Esslingen district is also one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb UNESCO Global Geopark.
