Sihva: Cross-Country Skiing, Circular Trails and Nature Park
Accommodation in Sihva
If you are looking for accommodation in Sihva, you will find a clearly described combination of cross-country skiing, circular trails and landscape experiences here. The Pühajärve–Kääriku cross-country ski trail is 10 km long and offers opportunities for skiing and hiking on natural snow. In addition, this trail includes a 2.5 km section between Sihva and Kääriku that is lit until 9 p.m. However, a cross-country ski trail does not automatically equate to a classic ski resort with lifts or groomed downhill runs.
Winter trails between Sihva and Kääriku
The lighting is limited to the section between Sihva and Kääriku and does not automatically apply to the entire Pühajärve–Kääriku cross-country ski trail. On the cross-country ski trail, skiing and hiking depend on natural snow; the Hiking Trail and Sensory Trail are circular hiking trails.
Circular trails for hiking
The Pühajärve Hiking Trail is a 14 km circular hiking trail. The Pühajärve Sensory Trail offers a shorter or differently oriented option. It is also a circular hiking trail and is suitable for younger and older hikers. The trail begins at the Kooliranna campfire site. This is located in the village of Sihva, in Otepää Municipality and Otepää Nature Park. The 14 km Hiking Trail and the Sensory Trail are separate hiking offerings.
The Pühajärve Sensory Trail has wooden walkways in damp areas and bridges over streams. However, this is not a general statement about the accessibility of the entire trail or about the facilities on other routes.
Landscape in the wider regional area
The wider regional area around Sihva includes Otepää Nature Park, Estonia’s largest protected landscape area. It covers 222 km² and is located in the hilly Otepää Upland. Pühajärv is also located in this wider area. The lake covers 290.7 ha, has a winding shoreline and five wooded islands. The area of 222 km² refers to the park, while the figure of 290.7 ha refers to the lake. The shoreline and islands belong to Pühajärv, not to the entire protected area. This landscape complements the winter trails with a regional natural setting, without implying a direct location relationship to any individual accommodation.
Orientation and local context
Access to the Pühajärve Sensory Trail is via Otepää-Nüpli-Sihva Road, road no. 23160, 5.8 km in the direction of Sihva. This access point refers to the Sensory Trail and not automatically to the 14 km Pühajärve Hiking Trail. The 5.8 km indicates the approach in the direction of Sihva, not the length of the circular trail. For orientation purposes, the road section and the hiking route should therefore be considered separately.
The Pühajärve Library is also part of the local context. It is a branch library in the village of Sihva. In local history, Sihva is identified as the present-day village of Voeste, which was mentioned as Wodis in 1419. The library is part of the village context; Wodis is the historical name from 1419. Both references concern the settlement and its history, not the operation of the winter trails.
For a classic ski trip with lifts, downhill runs or different piste levels, however, you need additional information about the respective winter sports region.
