Valga: Nature, Culture and Winter Sports at a Regional Glance
Accommodation in Valga
Valga combines winter sports, lake landscapes, viewpoints, and cultural and military history. At Kuutsemäe Puhkekeskus, there are eight downhill slopes for snowboarding and alpine skiing. The slopes have different levels of difficulty and are between 214 and 473 metres long. In addition, the 34-metre-high viewing platform at the Tehvandi ski jump offers views of ski jumpers during training or competitions, as well as of the surrounding landscape.
Winter sports between slopes and year-round activities
Kuutsemäe Resort enables active holidays all year round. In summer, it also has a disc golf park with four courses of varying difficulty. Kuutsemäe Puhkekeskus also offers hiking and cycling trails for summer leisure activities.
Karula National Park and Lake Landscapes
Karula National Park was founded on 8 December 1993 and is Estonia’s smallest national park. There are 60 lakes on the Karula Upland, 40 of which belong to Karula National Park. Lake Pühajärv is the largest lake in Otepää Nature Park and has four islands.
The 14-kilometre Pühajärve Hiking Trail runs around Lake Pühajärv as a circular route for pedestrians. Natural features near this hiking trail include Armuallikas. During the summer season, Pühajärve Harbour rents out rowboats, canoes, pedal boats, SUP boards, surfbikes and RayFoils for trips on Lake Pühajärv. Pühajärve Beach offers SUP board and boat rental in summer. In summer, the beach also offers clean sand, a bathing jetty and a full-size outdoor swimming pool. These services are explicitly seasonal and should therefore not be understood as available year-round.
Vanamõisa Beach has a long sandy beach, a waterfront promenade and areas for ball games.
Observation Towers and Distinctive Landscapes
The 25-metre-high Tellingumäe observation tower offers views of the winding ravines of the Mustjõgi River and the hilly landscape typical of southern Estonia. The tower is also used for observing nature and birds. The highest platform of Lõvitorn in Tõrva is 11 metres above the water surface, while the entire tower, including the lighting masts, reaches a height of 14 metres.
Castles, Caves and Medieval Traces
The Otepää Castle Hill contains the ruins of a stone castle founded by Bishop Hermann in 1224. In Helme, the ruins of the Order Castle probably date from the first half of the 14th century. Parts of its walls, with distinctive window openings, still stand today. Helme Order Castle was destroyed by Swedish forces in 1658. North of the castle ruins, the Helme Caves expose approximately three metres of white sandstone from the Burtnieki Formation. The Helme Caves once consisted of seven interconnected chambers; the largest was known as Moses Church.
Otepää and the History of the Estonian Flag
Otepää is also connected with the history of the Estonian national flag. The blue, black and white flag that later became Estonia’s national flag was consecrated on 4 June 1884 in the parish house of Otepää’s Evangelical Lutheran St. Mary’s Church. The church also has a Neo-Gothic altarpiece entitled “Christ on the Cross”, dating from 1880.
Museums and Military History in Valga
The permanent exhibition at Valga Museum presents the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Valga County and the city from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum also organises educational programmes, museum lessons and creative workshops. The outdoor exhibitions at Valga Military Theme Park display military equipment, cannons, a Mi-8 helicopter, a fire engine, various machine-gun positions and sea mines. The Valga Military Theme Park Museum has Estonia’s largest collection of weapons. At the Valga War Museum, visitors can test their shooting skills on a shooting simulator.
Sangaste Castle and Regional Cuisine
Sangaste Castle and its park were designed after the famous Windsor Castle in England. The complex includes stables, a dairy, a barn, a water tower and an arboretum. The former horse stable of Sangaste Manor was converted into a visitor centre and now houses the exhibition “Rukkikrahv ja Ilmaimed”, or “The Rye Count and the Wonders of the World” in English. The exhibition covers the scientific wonders of the 19th century as well as Count Berg, the owner of Sangaste Castle. The castle’s restaurant serves regional dishes and rye vodka made from Sangaste rye.
