Greve Strand by the Water: Beach, Trails and History
Accommodation in Greve Strand
Greve Strand combines a distinctive coastal landscape with harbour life, varied trails and a clearly visible history as a holiday area. Greve Station at Stationsholmen 6, 2670 Greve Strand, is served by S-train lines A and E.
Beach and Water around Greve Strand
The wide sandy beach at Greve Strand stretches from Mosede to Hundige Harbour. By Greve Badehotel, this section of beach is approximately one kilometre long. There, the water is typically less than 1 m deep up to about 100 m from the shore.
South of Mosede Harbour, the beach is suitable for swimming and water activities.
Another nearby landscape area is Hundige Strandpark, with a 7 km-long beach area, white sand, dunes, lakes and meadows. The beach park adds various natural elements to the coastal landscape.
Mosede Harbour and Sailing
The nearby Mosede Harbour offers a harbour setting with restaurants, clubs and recreational sailors. Sejlklubben Greve Strand, or SGS for short, is the meeting place for sailors at Mosede Harbour. The club promotes sailing through regattas and joint sailing trips, as well as instruction in practical and theoretical seamanship.
Routes for Walks and Bike Rides
An approximately 3 km-long town tour along Greve Strand runs from Villa Olsbæk to Mosede Harbour. The 21.7 km-long Hedebostien cycling and hiking route runs from Køge Bay at Trylleskoven to Roskilde. For longer hikes, the approximately 64 km-long Gudernes stræde route runs from Køge Bay to Vellerup Vig through landscapes of natural and cultural-historical significance.
With its approximate length of about 3 km, the town tour is clearly separate from the two longer routes. Hedebostien is designated as a cycling and hiking route, while Gudernes stræde is a hiking route through landscapes of natural and cultural-historical significance.
Summer Houses, the Seaside Hotel and Local History
Greve Badehotel was built on the beach in the 1920s. Greve Strandkro, formerly Greve Badehotel, was built in 1926 in the Neoclassical style. The year 1926 also marks the existence of a bathing facility for visitors at Greve Badehotel as part of the local history.
From 1920 onwards, the coastal area of Greve Strand developed into a true holiday area with smaller summer houses and tent camps. Villa Sitka is an important part of the history of Greve Strand. It was built in 1912 as the summer residence of director Kai Laage Thomsen. As part of the same development, industrialists, artists and affluent Copenhageners built impressive summer houses near the water at the beginning of the 20th century.
Mosede Fort is also part of the cultural-historical orientation in Greve Strand. On 6 August 2014, the new Mosede Fort – Danmark 1914-18 museum opened, with exhibitions about Denmark during the First World War.
