Høje-Taastrup Municipality: Hedeland, Nature and Culture

At the heart of Hedeland Nature Park are a ski track and a viewpoint; the path to the summit rises 50 metres. The nature park covers more than 1,000 hectares of hills, lakes and green spaces and was created from a former gravel-mining landscape. Høje-Taastrup Municipality combines this specific connection to skiing with natural areas, marked trails, museums and venues.

Nature and Open Spaces

Hakkemosen offers year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation, a shelter, a fire pit, spaces for outdoor meals and hammocks. It is also home to the giant troll sculpture Teddy Venlig by artist Thomas Dambo, made from recycled materials. Visitors can gather edible plants in Hakkemosen, catch fish in Hakkemosesøen and prepare the food at a fire pit near the shelter.

Selsmosen is a water park in the middle of Taastrup. It includes a raft, a water maze, a climbing bridge, stepping stones and a beach volleyball court. The lake at Selsmosen is home to a diverse range of birds and wildlife.

In the wider regional area around Høje-Taastrup, St. Vejleådal is an 11.3-kilometre-long green corridor between Høje-Taastrup Municipality and Albertslund Municipality. The landscape includes lakes, streams, meadows, scrubland, forest, wetlands, marshland, salt meadows and individual artificial hills. The St. Vejleådal nature area offers opportunities year-round for walking, running, cycling, fishing, water skiing, horse riding and canoeing.

Also in the wider regional area, Vestskoven covers 1,400 hectares and four municipalities: Albertslund, Høje-Taastrup, Glostrup and Ballerup. The 5-kilometre-long Kringelstien runs through the forest, along marshes and past hills, and is suitable for wheelchair users. In the former gravel-mining area, Hedelands Veteranbane offers a 5-kilometre train ride with eight stops where visitors can get off.

Trails and Activities

The Høje-Taastrup Marathon Ring is a marked 42-kilometre route for walking, running and cycling. It also includes shorter sections of 30, 21, 10 and 7 kilometres. The different lengths make the routes comparable without requiring visitors to complete the entire circuit.

The Cloverleaf Trails in Høje-Taastrup consist of four marked trails of different lengths, starting at Taastrup Library. The red Cloverleaf Trail leads to St. Vejleådal. The black Cloverleaf Trail presents the history of Taastrup – from the construction of Høje Taastrup Church in the early Middle Ages, through the brick industry of the 19th century, to modern urban development around Selsmosen.

Along its route, the Cloverleaf Trail passes Taastrup Cultural Centre, the local history archive at Blåkildegård and the disc golf area in Mølleparken. In this way, marked trails of different lengths complement individual nature and activity offerings.

Culture, History and Events

Høje Taastrup Church is a large village church built at the beginning of the 12th century, with a 30-metre-high tower. Its history also includes a battle between Kings Knud and Svend in 1149.

The Vikingebro attraction consists of a road and bridge route through the landscape of Store Vejleådalen between Høje-Taastrup and Albertslund. The road and bridge structure is 700 metres long and was completed in 2019.

The archive at Blaakildegaard is located at Skolevej 54 in Taastrup and extends across the farm’s four wings. It includes storage rooms, exhibition spaces, a reading room and administrative offices; the archive also contains many local artefacts. Kroppedal Museum is the local museum for the municipalities of Albertslund and Høje-Taastrup. It offers exhibitions, guided city tours, lectures and other events on archaeology, astronomy and modern history for children, young people and adults.

During the winter season from October through March, Kroppedal Museum hosts evenings with popular-science lectures and opportunities for observation. The museum garden also includes a 140-metre-long natural obstacle course.

Taastrup Theatre and Music House is a professional theatre and venue for concerts, theatre performances and various shows. In the Hedeland landscape at Tranemosevej 8 in Hedehusene, Opera Hedeland stages operas in an amphitheatre. The Hedeland Amphitheatre is an open-air venue converted from a gravel pit, with more than 4,000 seats.

Getting There and Geographical Context

Høje Taastrup railway station is located on the Vestbanen line between Copenhagen Central Station and Roskilde. It is the terminus of S-train lines B and Bx and is served by InterCity and regional trains. For Opera Hedeland events, a free shuttle bus connects the west side of Høje Taastrup station, near the taxis, with the venue.
