Grobnik’s Cultural Heritage and Routes

Today, the old town of Grobnik is considered the most important cultural landmark in the wider Grobnišćina region and invites you to stroll through its rich heritage. Grobnik Castle is now a gallery and museum, as well as a venue for various cultural events. Restoration work on the south tower was funded as part of the “Putevima Frankopana” project. This included roof repairs, facade and masonry work, as well as the renovation of floors and carpentry.

One specific way to experience historic sites and the landscape together is the 5 km Čavle - C5 Frankopanska staza. It leads to historic monuments from the time of the Frankopans. These include Kaštel Zrinskih i Frankopana, the country house of the nobleman Franjo Frankulin from 1660, and the churches of Sv. Filipa i Jakova, Sv. Trojice and Sv. Križa. Along the way, there are views of the Rječina gorge, Rijeka and the Kvarner. The Church of Sv. Filipa i Jakova in Grobnik has stood there for 900 years and bears witness to early Christianity in this area.

In the centre of Čavle stands the Čebuhar House, a historic and tourist landmark. It commemorates the respected and enterprising Čebuhar family. Together with Grobnik’s cultural heritage, it offers another reason to include local history in your travel plans alongside outdoor activities.

Regional Cuisine and Festivals

Grobnik cheese and potato polenta, “kompirica”, are dishes that have sustained generations of Grobnik residents. In their honour, the Festival of Polenta and Cheese is held every year at the end of June. In odd-numbered years it takes place in Čavle, and in even-numbered years in Jelenje. The festival includes cheese-making in a natural setting and the children’s cooking event Little Polenta, “Mića palenta”. The alternating venue is useful to know if you would like to time your trip to coincide with the festival.

At the end of August, Bartoja brings residents from across the municipality together to celebrate St Bartholomew’s Day. The event includes religious, cultural, entertainment, sports and culinary offerings. The landscape also shapes the character of the municipality: the Municipality of Čavle naturally combines a mountain and maritime climate and is rich in flora and fauna.
