Gornja Stubica: Hotels and Accommodation

The Peasants’ Revolt Museum is housed in the Baroque Oršić Castle, which was built in 1756 on the site of a medieval fortress. The castle retains a Baroque chapel with illusionistic frescoes. The museum is currently closed for the restoration of the building and a new exhibition; according to current plans, it will remain closed until spring 2027. The museum has offered workshops in medieval archery, the use of maces and fencing. A landscaped park is located nearby, and a one-kilometre footpath leads to Gupčeva lipa.

Culture

St George’s Parish Church in Gornja Stubica is mentioned in records from 1209 and 1340. The parish is recorded from 1334, while the oldest description of the church dates from 1622. Inside are three Baroque altars and a pulpit; the high altar was installed in 1740. The furnishings also include five electric bells, including a bell from 1713 weighing approximately 900 kilograms.

Next to Oršić Castle stands the Monument to Matija Gubec: a 6.5-metre-high statue with two 20-metre-long wings covered with bronze reliefs. The reliefs depict more than 300 figures and scenes from the Battle of Stubica. The monument was created by Antun Augustinčić and completed in 1973 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Peasants’ Revolt. The Rudolf Perešin Memorial Park in Gornja Stubica contains a statue of the pilot and a preserved MIG-21.

Nature

Gupčeva lipa stands next to St George’s Parish Church in Gornja Stubica. The tree is more than 400 years old, approximately 9 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 4.70 metres. Gupčeva lipa has been protected as a natural monument since 1957; at the same time, it is protected as a cultural monument.

Events

Vincekovo is celebrated in Gornja Stubica every January as a traditional festival of Saint Vincent, who is regarded as the patron saint of winegrowers and wine. The programme begins with a Mass at St Vincent Chapel in Modrovec, marks the beginning of work in the vineyards and promotes the wines of the Stubica area. The chapel stands on a hill above the village among vineyards and was built in the Classical Baroque style.

Jurjevo takes place every year around 23 April as a traditional multi-day event at Gupčeva lipa. The programme includes exhibitions, folklore performances, children’s programmes, concerts, religious services and the lighting of a St George’s bonfire. Susreti za Rudija is an annual event in Gornja Stubica held in honour of Rudolf Perešin, with a programme featuring aviation, culture and entertainment.
