Museums and Historic Architecture
The Krapina Neanderthal Museum presents its permanent exhibition across 18 thematic sections. The open-air museum of Staro Selo Kumrovec offers a different perspective: it conveys the authentic appearance of a Zagorje village from the early 20th century and includes around 40 restored buildings of traditional design. Visitors can choose between a thematically organized permanent exhibition and a village ensemble of historic buildings as distinct cultural highlights.
Pilgrimage Sites and Settlement History
Marija Bistrica is Croatia’s largest national Marian shrine and has a long tradition of religious tourism. In Lobor, the shrine of Majke Božje Gorske is located on a hillfort that was almost continuously inhabited from the Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age. The site thus brings together the shrine and a long history of settlement.
Thermal Facilities and Outdoor Trails
The wellness center at Terme Tuhelj includes Finnish saunas, steam baths, a laconium, a whirlpool, a cold-water pool, an ice cave and a Kneipp path. The outdoor pools include a wave pool, a 250-meter-long current channel and a children’s pool with slides. The Staza kroz krošnje Zelenjak treetop walkway includes a forest walk, a trumpet sculpture, a sound fence and a birdwatching point. It combines a path through the forest with several specific stops. Check local conditions before your visit.
Cycling, Wine and Regional Cuisine
The moderately difficult “Around Lobor and the Western Ivanščica” cycling tour combines nature and archaeology. Another route, from Tuheljske Toplice via Črešnjevec and back, starts at the parking lot of Mihanović Castle and passes numerous vineyards and wine taverns. The two routes have different thematic focuses: nature and archaeology on the one hand, vineyards and wine taverns on the other. Signage and local conditions on the second route may change; check both before setting out.
HiĹľa vinove loze in the center of Radoboj is an interpretation center dedicated to grapevines, viticulture and related traditions. Presentations and tastings are held there regularly for visitors, showcasing wines from local winemakers and wine products such as liqueurs. The center focuses both on the history of viticulture and on the products presented there.
The Štruklijada is also part of the region’s event culture. Held annually at changing locations in Hrvatsko Zagorje, it is an exhibition and competition where restaurateurs compete for the title of best Zagorski štrukli. The venue and dates vary; check the latest information if you plan to include the Štruklijada in your trip. The name “Zagorski štrukli” was registered as an EU-wide protected name on March 7, 2022.
