Morin-Heights: Trails, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in Morin-Heights
Morin-Heights can be explored through its varied trail offerings and a historic local landmark. To help plan your stay, consider three questions: Would you like to focus on cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, cycling routes, or a short hike to a viewpoint? The offerings vary by activity, length and maintenance; there is also the Anglican Trinity Church and its cemetery.
Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoe Trails
Morin-Heights maintains a 130-kilometre network of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Of these, 65 kilometres are machine-groomed. A further maintenance detail applies to the 65 kilometres of trails that are not machine-groomed: they are cleared in the fall, but are not machine-maintained in winter. When comparing trails for a stay, length and maintenance type are therefore two distinct points of reference.
The municipality also maintains 18 kilometres of snowshoe trails. Sommet Morin Heights has 12 kilometres of snowshoe trails; access to these trails is managed by Les Sommets. Their opening depends on seasonal snow cover. If Sommet Morin Heights is part of your plans, take this condition into account and check current conditions before setting out.
The Corridor aérobique and Cycling Routes
The Corridor aérobique is a 58-kilometre linear trail along the former CN railway line between Morin-Heights and St-Rémi-d’Amherst. It runs alongside mountains, through dense forests, valleys and rural areas, and along the banks of numerous waterways and cascades. Its length, route and scenery give the trail a different character from the local cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.
The Corridor can be used on foot, on skis or by bicycle from June to mid-October. This seasonal information is an important point of reference when planning. It distinguishes the stated period of use from an assumption of year-round availability and brings together several ways of getting around on the same long route.
For mountain biking, Parc Basler offers a network of about 15 kilometres of trails. Most are rated easy to intermediate. The network also includes two panoramic viewpoints and a loop around Lac Lefebvre. In addition to the approximate total distance, the rating and trail features provide specific points of comparison.
Sommet Morin Heights also offers an extensive mountain bike trail network with terrain of varying difficulty. The descriptions of Parc Basler and Sommet Morin Heights emphasize different aspects: for Parc Basler, approximate length, ratings and individual trail features are specified; for Sommet Morin Heights, the range of difficulty levels is highlighted. A municipal rest area on the Rivière-à -Simon provides cyclists and kayakers with access to the river.
A Short Trail and Historic Character
If you’re looking for a short hike in addition to longer trails, Parc du Geai Bleu leads to a viewpoint. The description highlights the manageable trail length and its destination. This is a different kind of outing from the 58-kilometre Corridor aérobique or the mountain bike trail network at Parc Basler.
The Anglican Trinity Church and its cemetery are also part of Morin-Heights’ local landmarks. Both have heritage value because of their historical and social significance. The church is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the community. This historic connection complements the selection of trails and activities without being another trail offering in itself.
