If you’re looking for accommodation in Regional Municipality of Halton, you can plan your trip around the waterfront, forests, cycling or culture. Residents and visitors can access more than 25 km of Lake Ontario shoreline. Inland, there are also nature and recreation destinations. Which features are right for you depends on the places and activities you want to include in your trip.

Waterfront, Forests and Waterfalls

Halton’s Regional Forests cover 695 hectares across 14 areas. They include wooded areas, wetlands and meadows; these habitats provide homes for wildlife, including several rare species. If you enjoy exploring different landscapes, you’ll find a variety of natural areas inland as well as the Lake Ontario waterfront. At Hilton Falls Conservation Area, you can view a 10-metre waterfall from an observation platform—a year-round activity.

Trails and Outdoor Destinations

The single-track trails in Halton’s Regional Forests are used by hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. At Crawford Lake Conservation Area, a raised boardwalk loops around a pristine lake on the Niagara Escarpment. For a day by the water, Kelso Conservation Area offers a supervised beach on a 35-hectare lake, where visitors can swim and rent a boat. Bronte Creek Provincial Park has a 1.8-acre swimming pool. It is one of the largest artificially constructed swimming pools in North America. This gives you a choice of different trip highlights, from nature trails and lakeshores to swimming destinations.

Cycling Loops and Connections

Three cycling loops with published distances and elevation gains are available for planning a bike trip: the Tour de Trafalgar is 43 km long with 173 metres of elevation gain. Velodrome Vista covers 50 km with 310 metres of elevation gain, while Campbellville Crossroads covers 42 km with 215 metres of elevation gain. Local cycling loops in Halton connect cyclists to GO stations via multi-use trails and designated bike lanes. The Ontario’s Waterfront Trail passes through Halton communities at the Royal Botanical Gardens, La Salle Park and the Art Gallery of Burlington.

Culture and Special Places

In Oakville, the Oakville Museum offers tours of the Chisholm family home. Exhibits include Oakville’s Black history and the multimedia presentation “The Underground Railroad - Next Stop Freedom!” In Halton Hills, the large lime kilns and an old 19th-century powder house in Limehouse Conservation Area recall Ontario’s heritage. The Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton is also a notable place to visit: it is the only velodrome of its kind in Canada and serves both as a community recreation facility and as a venue for provincial, national and international events.

Seasonal Experiences and Regional Activities

In Halton Hills, farm attractions offer seasonal berry picking in spring and summer, as well as pumpkin patches and corn mazes in fall. This adds a seasonal focus to your trip planning if you’re planning a visit to the community. In Acton, the sheep farm OVINO currently offers farm tours with sheep’s milk and yogurt tastings on weekends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take the respective communities and the specific time of your trip into account when making your selection, so your search is guided by the excursions you have planned.
