Revelstoke offers several starting points for planning your stay: public art, railway history, forestry, trails, and Mount Revelstoke National Park just outside town. Depending on your interests, you can focus on exhibitions, a guided walking tour, the farmers’ market, or outdoor experiences. These topics give you a concrete basis for deciding what you would like to experience during your stay in Revelstoke.

Art and Local History

The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre is home to Revelstoke’s only public art gallery. It includes a large main gallery and three adjoining side galleries for solo and group exhibitions. Visitors interested in visual art can therefore find both rotating exhibition formats and a variety of gallery spaces. The centre also offers hands-on art workshops for children, teens, adults, and families. Participants explore different media. If you want art to be part of your trip not only as an exhibition but also as a creative activity of your own, these workshops are a separate point to consider when planning.

More than 20 public artworks are spread throughout Revelstoke. They are not confined to gallery spaces but can be found in different parts of town. Another cultural destination is the Revelstoke Museum & Archives, with its Heritage Garden, the only green space in downtown Revelstoke. The museum also offers a guided walking tour focused on the built heritage of the historic downtown. It lasts about an hour and is suitable for children. At about an hour long, the tour can be planned as a standalone activity.

Railway and Forestry

The Revelstoke Railway Museum is located at 719 Track Street West. The museum offers guided group tours year-round on the history of Canadian railways for schools, tour groups, clubs, and organizations. The tours also cover the people who built and operated the railways, as well as Revelstoke’s role in connecting the country. Advance booking is required. For groups wanting to explore these topics in more depth, booking ahead is a specific planning consideration.

The BC Interior Forestry Museum combines indoor and outdoor spaces: inside, exhibits and artifacts showcase forestry, past and present; outside, there is a large display of equipment. The museum also has a viewpoint with the “Best Dam View” of Revelstoke Dam. This brings together several aspects of forestry and a specific viewpoint. If you are more interested in the region’s work and material history, this focus complements railway history with a different subject.

Trails, Park and Market

The paved Revelstoke River Trail runs from the Revelstoke Community Centre to the Mark Kingsbury Bridge over the Illecillewaet River. There are eight heritage interpretation panels along the route. The trail therefore combines walking with information about local history. Revelstoke also has other trails, multi-use pathways, and sidewalks for pedestrians. The River Trail is specifically described as paved and having interpretation panels; you should not automatically assume the other routes have the same features.

Mount Revelstoke National Park is just outside Revelstoke. The Meadows in the Sky Parkway lets you drive from the river valley up into the alpine environment. This is a distinct way to experience the landscape from the valley to higher elevations. When planning, keep in mind that this is a drive along the parkway; this does not imply that there are hiking trails or other facilities.

The Revelstoke Farm & Craft Market takes place every Saturday from May to October at Grizzly Plaza. Vendors bring together agricultural produce, baked goods, and handmade items. If your stay falls during this period, you can consider Saturday as a possible day to visit the market.
