Hiking and Nature
The signposted and certified Nevyastata Eco Trail begins at the St. Panteleimon Chapel and is 750 meters long. In addition, the Smolyan Municipality offers more than 20 signposted hiking eco-routes and trails.
The Canyon of Waterfalls is located in the area of the Soskovcheto Reserve and its buffer zone. It comprises 46 waterfalls; the largest has a drop of just under 70 meters. Soskovcheto is associated with wild goats and brown bears. The Soskovcheto and Amzovo reserves are located about fifteen minutes from Smolyan. In Amzovo, the bog clubmoss is a protected species.
Trails and Travel
Smilyan is the starting point for more than twelve signposted mountain hiking trails with rest areas. The Smolyan Municipality also includes sections of the Iron Curtain Route, the Trans-Rhodope Cycling Route, and the Sultan's Trail, as well as signposted local cycling routes and forest roads.
Regular bus services connect Smolyan with Sofia, Plovdiv, and Kardzhali.
Culture
Turluka was a Thracian sanctuary that was used for more than a millennium. The foundations of a monastery complex and a three-aisled Christian basilica were found at this site.
The Smolyan Planetarium offers shows in the star hall for children, as well as educational, popular, and thematic programs. Programs in foreign languages are available in Russian, French, German, English, Greek, and Turkish.

Smilyan is associated with special yellow cheeses and traditional dairy products, including Miahovo cheese, milk pie, and full-fat curd cheese.
