The Historical Museum – Razlog houses more than 5,000 exhibits. The exhibitions focus on archaeology, ethnography, and the history of the city during the last century. The museum also preserves movable cultural heritage that reflects the past of Razlog and the settlements in its municipality. It is housed in a Bulgarian National Revival house in the Razlog-Chepino style from the late 19th century near the city center; in 1905, the building was reconstructed according to its original layout.

Culture

Patokova House houses the Museum of Razlog Chaush, which is part of the Historical Museum – Razlog. It presents local Kukeri and Survakari traditions and illustrates local folklore and ways of life, as well as customs associated with Babinden, Easter, and St. George’s Day, through its exhibits.

The “Ancient Solar Calendar” in Razlog’s central park consists of 12 marble moraines with carved animal figures arranged in a circle.

At the heart of Razlog stands the “St. Annunciation Church,” with a 26-meter-high bell tower. Its interior was completely decorated with frescoes from 2000 to 2008.

Festivals and traditions

Starchevata takes place in Razlog every year on January 1. Bells, drums, and zurnas mark the beginning of the New Year’s Kukeri Festival. Groups from Razlog’s seven neighborhoods appear as Chaushi, Kukeri, costumed young women and men, Survakari, bear leaders, jesters, and musicians playing zurnas and drums.

Razlog also hosts an international Kukeri carnival every other year, attended by mask and Kukeri groups from around the world.

Nature

Golak Hill above Razlog is visited by locals and the city’s guests for walks, recreation, and views over the Razlog Valley. The Steps Eco Trail on Golak has 54 recreation spots and 30 viewpoints. A 12-meter-high observation tower, benches, swings, and wooden loungers stand on Golak’s ridge.
