Tailles on the Plateau des Tailles
Accommodation in Tailles
Tailles lies on the Plateau des Tailles, above the Eastern Ourthe and the Salm. The village is described as Belgium’s highest village, at an elevation of approximately 600 metres. This location may be a reason to visit in winter, but it does not confirm that any slopes or lifts are open. The previous page title referred to Baraque de Fraiture as a ski resort; the verified facts about the area do not establish a specific connection between that ski resort and accommodation in Tailles. Therefore, check winter sports options, weather and directions separately for your travel date.

The Plateau and Village Scene
The Les Tailles area has relatively flat, gently domed terrain, with little incision by streams. Part of the Grand Passage lies within the Plateau des Tailles state nature reserve. Removing plants, flowers and fruit is prohibited there, with blueberries as an exception. This rule does not indicate whether individual paths are currently accessible. In the village, buildings made of slate and arkose stand out, some with timber cladding and slate roofs. The village scene therefore offers a different reason to visit than planning a day of skiing.
History and Routes
When Les Tailles became an independent parish, a church dedicated to Saint Gilles was built in 1611–1612. It was rebuilt in 1785. A pilgrimage to Saint-Gilles took place for several decades; the Moulin des Tailles is listed as one of four ban mills in a record from 1682. Regional cycling routes pass through Tailles for longer rides. A 55-kilometre loop from the Plateau des Tailles to the Bernistap Canal includes a section from Houffalize to Les Tailles. The Houffalize mountain biking map describes six routes ranging from 18 to 36 kilometres. These are regional routes, not confirmed winter pistes in the village.
When looking for accommodation, compare the actual address with your planned route and check the current options. Prices, amenities, snow conditions and traffic cannot be inferred from the historical description of the area.
