Blons: Nature Trails, Walser Culture and History
Accommodation in Blons
Blons combines nature experiences, trails with historical significance and cultural features. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on brief insights, extended hikes or the history of the village. Numerous biotope areas and old hay meadows of high ecological value shape the character of the surrounding area.
Natural Environment and Landscape around Blons
One prominent viewpoint is Falvkopf above Blons. The mountain is 1,849 m high and offers a mountain panorama. Alpe Sera also provides its own seasonal highlight: In early summer, it is home to a species-rich flora. Well-maintained hiking trails lead from Blons to the typically Walser alpine village of Sera. This allows you to experience the landscape not only as a panorama, but also through its trails and traditional land management.
Old mountain farmsteads are another defining feature of the landscape. Their stables built on the uphill side and their avalanche protection measures illustrate how the buildings were adapted to the conditions of the mountain landscape. Blons also has an “avalanche rampart”, an earth embankment with a so-called rampart tree. Such distinctive features give a visit to the village a tangible connection to its history and landscape.
Hiking Trails with Different Focuses
Several themed trails are available for planning your day. The Schutzwaldweg is 4 km long, takes around 2.5 hours and has 250 metres of elevation gain. Depending on the route, the Verbauungsweg is 3.5–4 km long; here too, the duration is around 2.5 hours and 250 metres of elevation gain must be taken into account. These details make it easier to compare the two trails if you want to assess your available time and preferred route length in advance.
The Leusorgweg is one of three themed trails established in Blons to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the avalanche disaster. It can be reached by the L570 Landbus to the “Blons Gemeindezentrum” stop. The hiking trail of the Blonser Land-Art-Weg passes directly by the “Metamorphose Walserkamm” land art installation. Depending on your interests, this allows you to combine a themed trail, the landscape and art without equating the individual offerings in terms of their content.
Walser Culture and Remembrance
Cultural destinations are also part of getting your bearings in Blons. The Marlies Jenny Doll Museum presents an overview of the history of dolls from 1850 to 1960. The parish church in Blons was built between 1684 and 1687 and enlarged between 1863 and 1873. It also has a memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1954 avalanche.
The Avalanche Documentation Centre is located in the Blons municipal centre. Using original reports and films, it provides information about the 1954 avalanche disaster. This offers another place to explore the historical connection that is also visible along the themed trails and at the memorial.
Blons for Planning Your Trip
The documented trails differ mainly in their thematic focus and stated route length. Those seeking nature and flora can include Alpe Sera and the biotope areas in their plans. Those interested in landscape design, avalanche protection or local history will find further points of interest in the themed trails, the Documentation Centre, the parish church and the mountain farmsteads. When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these interests should shape your days in Blons, and incorporate the respective trail data into your personal planning.
