Bad Leonfelden: Sternstein, Winter Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Bad Leonfelden
If you are looking for accommodation for a ski holiday in Bad Leonfelden, the Sternstein offers a specific winter attraction: there is a dedicated ascent route for ski tourers and piste skiers. At the same time, the area combines mountain scenery, hiking trails and historical destinations. This allows you to plan your trip according to whether winter activities on the Sternstein, a walk through the spa town or an excursion to cultural and historical sites is your main priority.
Winter orientation on the Sternstein
The Sternstein is 1,125 m high. The Sternsteinwarte observation tower stands on its summit and was opened on 20 October 1899. Anyone who climbs the tower to the top is rewarded with panoramic views across the Mühlviertel. Another viewpoint is located along the Sternstein circular trail: the 1,000-m-Platzl offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
The dedicated ascent route for ski tourers and piste skiers is a clearly identifiable winter option. The designation describes the ascent, but does not automatically imply a specific lift or piste offering.
Hiking trails between the watershed and the Moorwald forest
The “Salzstraße” is a hiking trail from Bad Leonfelden via the European watershed and the Rading border crossing to Vyšší Brod. The European watershed is marked by a round granite slab that was formerly used as the Brunnstein fountain. It also illustrates a geological peculiarity: the Rodl flows into the Danube and onward to the Black Sea, while the Granitzbach drains into the Vltava, the Elbe and ultimately the North Sea.
The Moorwald Adventure Trail is available for a shorter nature-focused outing. It offers playful insights into the habitats of forests and moors, as well as the Moorwald ecosystem. Those who want to compare different types of trails can also include the Glasöfen archaeological excavation site in their plans. It can be reached via the Via-Leone hiking trails and is located near the Sternstein circular trail.
History and craftsmanship as supplementary activities
The Schwedenschanze, a relic from the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, lies on the border with the Czech Republic. It can be reached via the old “Salzstraße” trade route from Bad Leonfelden to Vyšší Brod. Structural remains and production waste from medieval and early modern glassworks have been excavated on the Sternstein. The Glasöfen therefore combines route planning on the mountain with a tangible insight into the history of earlier craftsmanship.
In the town area, the city walk takes the form of a circular route with 20 stations leading through the character and history of the spa town of Bad Leonfelden. It begins at the Stadtplatz Bad Leonfelden bus stop by the Hole CityStore and ends at Stadtplatz Bad Leonfelden. The “Eiserne Hand” is also one of the historical points of interest: the 2 m-high and 25 cm-wide stone pillar presumably marks a fork in the road along the old Salzstraße. During market days, it indicated the legally granted right to hold annual markets, known as the “Stapelrecht”, while also drawing attention to the “harsher” jurisdiction in force at the time.
The Upper Austrian School Museum is housed in a former school building. The building was constructed in 1577 as “DOMUS DISCIPLINAE” and used as a school until 1850. Visitors can take part in a “Historical School Lesson”, featuring a “schoolmaster” dressed in authentic clothing. Handblaudruck Wagner is one of the last two indigo-dyeing workshops in Austria, displays a large collection of pattern models and welcomes visitors to its workshop by prior telephone appointment. Tours of the Lebzeltarium are also available only by prior registration and for groups of at least five people.
Choose accommodation according to your travel profile
When looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Bad Leonfelden, it is worth deciding on your planned daily schedule first. For sport-oriented winter days, the Sternstein and its dedicated ascent route are the main attraction. For shared activities without a skiing-specific focus, the city walk, the Moorwald Adventure Trail and the paths along the Salzstraße are suitable options. Visitors interested in culture can combine the Schwedenschanze, the Glasöfen, the School Museum and the indigo-dyeing workshop, while taking into account the respective registration requirements for the Lebzeltarium and Handblaudruck Wagner.
If you would like to compare other places when searching for accommodation, you can also include Eidenberg, Sankt Magdalena, Zwettl An Der Rodl, Schild and Weignersdorf in your search.
