Steyr-Land: Nature Trails, Culture and Special Excursion Destinations

Steyr-Land combines experiences in nature with historic sites, themed trails and cultural attractions. In the Reichraming Hintergebirge and along the Reichramingbach, trails lead through nature; museums, castle ruins, pilgrimage churches and exhibitions provide additional highlights.

Nature and Trails in the Reichraming Hintergebirge

One hiking route is the Wildnistrail Buchensteig. The tour leads through the Reichraming Hintergebirge from Anzenbach to the Wilden Graben and back. The access to the national park via the 4462 Reichraming turn-off leads to the Anzenbach hiking area.

The Luchs Trail also passes through Reichraming. Along the clear Reichramingbach, quiet paths invite visitors to spend time by the stream and immerse themselves in the cool water.

In Weyer, the Kreuzberg nature reserve offers numerous opportunities for hiking and walking right in Weyer. The Burgberg in Losenstein is a valuable natural area with ravine forests and surrounding meadows that is protected.

Further trails reveal their own connections with the landscape and culture. The Guck-Naz Trail leads to the summit of Haingrabeneck at an elevation of 841 metres. The Borsee–Schleifenbachklause tour includes walking around Lake Borsee and visiting the Schleifenbachklause on the southern shore. The Nagelschmiedweg trail passes historic sites before reaching the dreamily situated lake of the Kesselfall.

Active Experiences for Different Interests

At five stations, the Wildbach Adventure Trail presents the work of torrent and avalanche control in a playful, creative and informative way. Along the trail, there are information boards and interactive elements.

The Trattenbach climbing centre includes climbing routes on the wall of the Beisteinmauer and on the Weißensteinerwand climbing crag. The summit of the Beisteinmauer is at an elevation of 632 metres and offers views across the Enns Valley.

Historic traces can also be experienced digitally. The Virtual Weißwasser Experience uses augmented reality on smartphones or tablets to make the historically significant Weißwasser mining settlement in the Reichraming Hintergebirge, which was dismantled in the 1960s, visible and accessible once again. The presentation extends for around 800 metres along the Hintergebirgsradweg cycle path.

The Steyrtal Museum Railway runs along a 17-kilometre route from Grünburg to Steyr through the wild and romantic floodplain landscape of the Steyr River. It is Austria's oldest narrow-gauge railway. The Sebaldustour, meanwhile, mainly follows cycle paths, lightly trafficked side roads and well-maintained farm roads.

For more relaxing hours, the Mediterrana thermal spa offers, among other things, a panoramic whirlpool, a vitality pool, a summer outdoor pool and the Relaxium sauna world.

Culture, History and Pilgrimage Sites

The Prevenhuber House was built in the second half of the 16th century in the style of a late Gothic patrician house. The gallery in the Prevenhuber House is open during exhibitions on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00.

In Trattenbach, the production of Taschenfeitel knives was recognised as intangible cultural heritage by the Austrian UNESCO Commission in 2015. The Brandstätter Hammer is home to the world's largest collection of hand-forged nails. In Losenstein, Losenstein Castle Ruins are one of Upper Austria's oldest castle complexes.

Opened in 2013, the Heiligenstein themed trail provides information at several stations in and around St. Sebald's Church about the history of the mountain sanctuary, its importance as a pilgrimage site and the work of St. Sebald. The Maria Neustift pilgrimage church houses an almost life-size statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1450. Guided tours of the Maria Neustift pilgrimage church are available by prior arrangement with the parish office.

Around 400 nativity scenes are on display in the Magical Nativity World. The Magical Nativity World can be visited year-round; guided tours are available by telephone appointment. The Ennstal Visitor Centre, located directly on the Enns between Reichraming and Grossraming, also houses the “Wonderland of Forest Wilderness” exhibition.
