Schwarzenberg Am Böhmerwald: Hochficht, Plöckenstein and Culture

Schwarzenberg Am Böhmerwald combines a documented winter sports offering with distinctive landscape destinations, regional history and independently accessible excursion destinations. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore important first to decide whether you want to focus on the Hochficht ski area, tours in the Bohemian Forest, or culture and peaceful alternatives away from the slopes.

Winter sports at Hochficht

The Hochficht ski area near the Schwarzenbergbahn is entirely geared towards the needs of beginners and families. In the area, nine lifts take winter sports enthusiasts from A to B across almost 30 kilometres of slopes with varying levels of difficulty. This combination provides clear guidance for groups in which not everyone skis at the same level: there are several levels of difficulty, without this implying any particular suitability for advanced skiers. For families, the Hochficht ski area also offers two kids’ parks, a fun park and a funslope. Kids’ parks are specially designated areas for children; the fun park and funslope represent additional, playfully designed elements of the winter sports offering. This makes it possible to arrange a day of skiing in different ways without assuming any other unverified facilities or childcare services.

Viewpoint rocks and the tripoint region

There are also destinations away from the ski area that showcase the character of the Bohemian Forest. Teufelsschüssel is a viewpoint rock in the Bohemian Forest with views across the Bohemian Forest region. From the Oberschwarzenberg car park, it can be reached via the Three-Country Trail in around 45 minutes on foot. The time indication is approximate and describes the walking time from this car park. At 1,378 metres, Plöckenstein is the highest elevation in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Forest, the entire Mühlviertel region and South Bohemia. The border between Austria and the Czech Republic runs directly over Plöckenstein. It is also located around one kilometre from the Austria-Germany-Czech Republic tripoint. The mountain is therefore not only a landscape destination, but is also connected with the cross-border location of the area.

Museum, wood art and Kneipp trail

Since 2005, the Adalbert Stifter Museum and Local Heritage House Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald has housed the permanent exhibition “Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald and the Three-Country Region in the Life and Work of Adalbert Stifter”. One of the highlights is the only Stifter hologram in the world. Glass objects there also document the era of three flourishing Schwarzenberg glassworks from 1638 to 1863. The Local Heritage House is equipped with a contactless access system and electronic audio guides. Visitors can explore the entire Local Heritage House independently, including the Adalbert Stifter exhibition and the Holy Sepulchre. In addition, Schwarzenberg Am Böhmerwald is characterised by many impressive wooden sculptures created by artists from all over the world at artists’ symposia. For an activity without ski equipment, the Kneipp barefoot trail is available. This is an artistically designed barefoot trail with water applications for the arms and feet. This makes it possible to combine winter sports, landscapes, local history and a special form of exercise into different focuses for your stay.
