Sankt Konrad: Discover panoramic trails and culture
Accommodation in Sankt Konrad
In Sankt Konrad, short, easy panoramic trails meet longer mountain and circular hikes. Cultural themes are also part of the picture, from the “Global Home” cultural trail to the Rüpelfelder in the Schrattenau. When looking for accommodation in Sankt Konrad, your planned excursions can provide a practical guide: Would you like a short, stroller-friendly route, a longer hike, or to include cultural connections in your trip as well?
Hikes by length and character
Both the Small and Large Panoramic Trails start at the car park by Lake St. Konrad. The Small Panoramic Trail is 4.6 km long, and the Large Panoramic Trail is 7 km. Both are rated easy and are also suitable for strollers. You can therefore choose between two routes of different lengths with the same difficulty rating; the difference in length is 2.4 km. Check the latest trail details before setting out, as route information may change.
The Hacklberg Höhenweg also starts at the car park by Lake St. Konrad. This 7.2 km high-altitude hike offers views of the mountains of the Almtal valley and the Totes Gebirge. The Laudachsee loop starts at the same car park, goes via the Schrattenau to Lake Laudachsee and then returns; it is 17.9 km long. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and in their described courses: the Hacklberg Höhenweg focuses on high-altitude hiking and views, while the Laudachsee loop follows the route via the Schrattenau to the lake and back.
The car park by Lake St. Konrad can serve as the starting point for the Steineck mountain hike; far-reaching panoramic views extend as far as the MĂĽhlviertel region. In Sankt Konrad, a hike up Steineck can also start at the St. Konrad DĂĽrnberg bus stop or at the car park beside the B 120. The Reisenberg circular trail starts at the Gasthaus Kranichsteg. It is 5.8 km long, is described as a sunny-side loop and offers views of Traunstein. The hikes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their stated starting points and views.
Cultural trail and local history
The “Global Home” cultural trail is a themed route in Sankt Konrad connected with the 2024 European Capital of Culture project. The project included a sculpture by Herbert Egger: a house made of wooden slats that plants and animals can move into. The shape of a house connects the idea of a work of art with that of a potential habitat for other living beings.
Photographs from “Eyes as big as Plates” were also part of cultural life in the area: from June 21, 2024, they were displayed along the 7-Brücken-Weg between the lake and Gasthof Silbermair. The work by Karoline Hjorth and Riita Ikonen comprises four portraits of people from St. Konrad and four of people from distant countries. The participants were transformed into figures at locations of their own choosing, blending into their surroundings. The local connection and the different places of origin of those portrayed give the project two perspectives on people and landscape.
The core of St. Konrad parish church dates from the Late Gothic period. If you would like to visit the church, check locally for access. Another historical connection lies above St. Konrad: According to tradition, the RĂĽpelfelder in the Schrattenau are evidence of an early indigenous population. This links the landscape with a local story whose interpretation is explicitly rooted in tradition.
For your trip planning, the options in Sankt Konrad can be organised around two questions: What trail length suits your plans, and would you like to include art, architecture or local history alongside a hike? The easy panoramic trails offer a clearly defined shorter and longer option; the mountain and circular hikes differ in route, starting points and views. The cultural trail, church and local traditions add further themes to explore during your stay.
