Gschwandt combines a hilly, forest-rich local landscape with a direct location on the Traunseetram between Gmunden and Vorchdorf. When choosing accommodation, the village therefore primarily provides orientation through its transport connections, its paths along the Wasserlosen Bach, its architectural and cultural history, and selected leisure activities.

Getting to and finding your way around Gschwandt

The Traunseetram, operated by Stern & Hafferl, runs directly through Gschwandt. Within the municipality, the stops are Neuhub, Gschwandt Schule, Gschwandt-Rabesberg, Unterm Wald and Baumgarten-Waldbach. From Gmunden to Gschwandt, onward connections are available towards Laakirchen and towards Kirchham, Vorchdorf and Eisengattern. Important for geographical orientation: Gmunden-Laakirchen airfield is located in Gschwandt, east of Gmunden and Lake Traunsee.

Nature, paths and Flachberg

The landscape of Gschwandt is characterised by hills and forests. Hiking Trail 2 runs along the Wasserlosen Bach and connects with Hiking Trail 1 in the direction of Flachberg. Flachberg is a 781 m-high pre-Alpine mountain in the immediate vicinity of Gschwandt and is approximately one hour on foot from Gschwandt. Thus, both a local stream and a named pre-Alpine mountain serve as points of reference for walks and hikes.

A Roman-era settlement existed along the Wasserlosen Bach approximately from 80 to 250 AD. In this section, the village therefore combines a visible landscape with a historical connection, without this implying any present-day use or a specific visitor offering.

Parish church and local history

Gschwandt Parish Church is a single-nave late Gothic rural church. It was built in the second half of the 15th century. Preserved from this period are a west gallery with a net-ribbed vault, a Gothic south portal with a vestibule, and a north portal.

Other late Gothic elements include a sculpture of Saint Sebastian and several panel paintings depicting various saints, each dating from around 1500. An additional historical connection leads to the former Baumgartenwirt: a traditional May devotion to Mary with Marian hymns was held there. The designation “former” is significant because it preserves the Baumgartenwirt’s previous status.

Sporting activities and special experiences

The indoor fun sports hall in Gschwandt measures 28 m × 15 m. It has two football goals and two handball goals, basketball hoops, and volleyball posts with a net. The hall is available to the people of Gschwandt and the neighbouring municipalities of the Gmunden city region. These include Altmünster, Gmunden, Kirchham, Laakirchen, Ohlsdorf, Pinsdorf, Traunkirchen and Vorchdorf. For groups with different interests, the hall is therefore a clearly defined sporting facility within the village; no further characteristics or conditions of use can be inferred from this.

Another option is a passenger flight at Gmunden airfield. During this experience, you pilot a Katana or a Falke for around 20 minutes. The Falke is a motor glider; you also make two landings. This is an independent experience alongside Gschwandt’s hiking, cultural and sporting activities.
