Liebenau for Ski Holidays, Cross-Country Skiing and Nature

Pfarrerberg has a 300-metre-long ski lift with a child-friendly platter lift. For cross-country skiing, the Liebenau Cross-Country Skiing Centre marks the beginning of a 100-kilometre network of interconnected trails. The Tannermoor, forest paths and regional excursion destinations also shape the experience.

Winter activities for different needs

With its child-friendly platter lift, the ski lift on Pfarrerberg is aimed at children and beginners. There is a gentle standard run and a somewhat more challenging wave run. This provides two runs with different characteristics, without implying that the area is a full-scale ski resort or that all visitors have a particular ability level. For families or groups with varying levels of experience, the specific difference between the two runs is especially relevant.

The cross-country skiing facilities are much more extensive. The Liebenau Cross-Country Skiing Centre is the starting point for a 100-kilometre network of interconnected trails. The cross-country ski trails are groomed and lead through snow-covered landscapes and winter forests. A compact option is the Arenaloipe 1.2 in the Liebenau winter sports arena: the circuit is 1.2 kilometres long, illuminated and equipped with artificial snowmaking. The artificial snowmaking applies to the Arenaloipe 1.2 and should not automatically be taken to apply to all trails or to the general snow conditions.

Tannermoor and paths through the landscape

The Tannermoor nature reserve is located in the market town of Liebenau and covers 124.2425 hectares. It was designated a nature reserve in 1983 and declared a European protected area in 2021. The moor is home to numerous rare plant and animal species. For a change of pace from the ski runs and cross-country trails, the network of paths around the Tannermoor includes the pram-friendly RUBNERtrail. The TANNERtrail is approximately six kilometres long. It features a moor foot bath, while the granite outcrops of Lehrmüller-Mauer offer a panoramic view.

Fishing is permitted at Rubenerteich from 1 May to 31 October. The MOOR-TREFF kiosk is staffed approximately from May to October. Outside opening hours or in bad weather, drinks and snacks are available from a vending machine there. These seasonal details complement the winter focus with another way to enjoy the area during the warmer months.

Local paths, cycling routes and history

The Wachtsteinweg leads from the centre of Liebenau to Wachtstein and onwards towards Tabormühle through meadows and forests. The Kampursprungweg runs via Glashütten and Hirschau to the source of the Kamp and returns to Liebenau via Schanz. Those who would like to explore the area by mountain bike will find a well-signposted mountain bike trail network connected to the mountain bike networks of the other alpine municipalities and the neighbouring Waldviertel region.

The Liebenau church is part of the town's history. It was built in 1754 and consecrated in 1755; in 1756, Liebenau became an independent parish. This means a stay can be tailored in different ways around winter sports, the moorland landscape, paths and local history. When looking for accommodation in Liebenau, you can therefore first decide whether your focus should be on the ski lift on Pfarrerberg, the cross-country skiing centre or the paths around the Tannermoor.
