Königswiesen lies on the Mühlviertler Alm at an altitude of 614 m. Local attractions bring together a forest lake, reminders of historic work, a striking rock formation and opportunities to get active. Specific visiting conditions are also important when planning your stay: the Klausteich pond is accessible only on foot, advance registration is required for the Heimathaus local history museum, and the season for the Erlebnisfreibad outdoor pool depends on the weather.

Landscape and distinctive places

The Klausteich is a forest lake in the Stiftinger Forst. It is accessible only on foot.

The Harlingsedt summit cross stands at an altitude of 920 m. From there, the view stretches from the Schneeberg to the Dachstein. The Johannesweg describes the Harlingsedter summit cross as a natural granite platform. Its altitude, views and geological description offer different points of reference for identifying this place.

Mill, timber transport and rock

The 80-year-old Reindlmühle mill lies on the Klammleiten adventure hiking trail and was renovated in 1999. Its waterwheel turns as it did in times gone by. The mill’s moving wheel is a central feature, while another reminder of work in Klammleiten illustrates a different aspect of the past: part of the so-called Gfluder wooden channel was rebuilt in 2002 to document the arduous timber transport of earlier times.

The Wackelstein balancing rock draws attention to a different kind of feature. The rock has an exceptionally small contact surface and shows spheroidal weathering. Unlike the waterwheel and the Gfluder, which tell of work in the past, here the defining feature is the shape of the rock itself. Visitors interested in cultural history and geology will find different topics here, without needing to treat them as the same thing.

Hiking trails and activities

The Klammleiten adventure hiking trail can also be walked in a shortened version. This offers a shorter alternative if you would like to cover a reduced section of this particular trail. By contrast, the Johannesweg is an 84.0-kilometre circular hiking trail. It continues to Königswiesen via the ascent to the Harlingsedter summit cross. The total distance and the described ascent help distinguish this route from the shortened version of the adventure hiking trail.

The Königswiesen pump track was designed for mountain bikers and BMX riders. There is also a children’s pump track for beginners and younger riders.

Planning visits and the season

Tours in Klammleiten, north of Königswiesen, can be arranged by calling +43 7955 6255. Make arrangements before your trip. The Königswiesen Heimathaus local history museum can also be visited by advance registration; confirm your appointment beforehand. Arranging visits is therefore part of planning for both attractions.

The Königswiesen Erlebnisfreibad outdoor pool season is generally scheduled each year from 15 May to approximately 15 September and is weather-dependent. Check the current daily notice before planning a swim. This lets you take both the usual season dates and weather-dependent opening into account without treating the season dates as a guarantee that the pool will be open on a particular day.
