Heiterwang offers several clearly distinct options for a winter stay: the ski area at Karlift is suitable for beginners and families, while the A15 Moosloipe runs along the canal on flat terrain towards Lake Heiterwang. There are also activities on the lake, circular walks, cultural sights and train travel with scheduled connections. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether skiing, cross-country skiing, trails by the water, excursions or a combination of these options should shape your stay.

Skiing at Karlift and cross-country skiing along the canal

The ski area at Karlift in Heiterwang is suitable for beginners and families. This classification is particularly helpful when a travel group includes people with different levels of experience or when getting started in winter sports is the main focus.

Another winter option is the A15 Moosloipe. It runs along the canal on flat terrain towards Lake Heiterwang. Anyone wishing to include a flat cross-country skiing route alongside skiing will find a different kind of activity here with a clearly described route. The connection to the lake also shows how closely winter sports in Heiterwang are thematically linked to the landscape around the bodies of water.

Lake Heiterwang: Water Sports and Circular Trail

Lake Heiterwang is connected to Plansee by a 300 m-long connecting canal. Rowing, surfing, swimming, diving and fishing are possible on Lake Heiterwang. A signposted circular trail around the lake starts at the Seestraße car park. This means that a stay does not have to be planned solely around the ski area: depending on your travel interests, you can also include lake activities or a walk by the water in your days.

Plansee also offers its own hiking option. The circular hike in the Heiterwang area is moderately difficult, 14.6 km long and listed as taking 3:30 hours. The route leads either directly along the lakeshore or on a panoramic trail around the lake. For your planning, the key distinction is therefore between a shorter activity at Lake Heiterwang and a longer, moderately difficult circuit at Plansee.

Travel by Train

Heiterwang railway station is a stop for connections between Reutte and Vils, as well as between Bichlbach, Lermoos, Ehrwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany and Innsbruck. There is no ticket counter; tickets are available on the train. The excursion destination Lake Heiterwang is approximately a 20-minute walk from the station. If you are travelling without your own car, these are among the practical points you should check before choosing your accommodation and planning your days.

Culture, Local History and Regional Dining

The protected historic area in Heiterwang includes the parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the cemetery and war memorials for the First and Second World Wars. The parish church of the Assumption contains frescoes by Josef Anton Walch from Kaufbeuren dating from 1750. Rococo stucco by Josef Fischer from Füssen can also be seen there. Anyone wishing to focus on culture between winter sports and excursions can incorporate these elements of local history into their travel plans.

For a culinary addition, the restaurant by the lake offers cheese and wine tastings in the hotel's almost 100-year-old vaulted wine cellar. This is a separate part of the stay and should not be equated with the offerings of the ski area or the activities on the lake.

Other Places to Compare

If you would like to compare Heiterwang with other destinations, you can also look at Häselgehr, Schattwald, Berwang, Breitenwang, Boden, Jungholz, Ehenbichl and Elmen. This allows you to focus your accommodation search on the place whose documented winter, nature or cultural offerings best suit your travel plan.
