Ellbögen: Accommodation Amid Alpine Pastures and Cultural History

Ellbögen is particularly notable as a place to stay for its combination of cultural history, alpine destinations, and a well-signposted network of trails in summer. Depending on your travel plans, different starting points and destinations take center stage: historical sites in the village, the Arztaler Alm, the Meissnerhaus in the Viggartal, or a cycling tour to the Profeglalm. In winter, the Meissnerhaus is also a meeting point for ski tourers, snowshoe hikers, and tobogganers. This creates a village character that combines natural and cultural themes without presupposing a particular accommodation location.

Cultural History in Ellbögen

The parish church of St. Peter in Ellbögen has been mentioned since the beginning of the 14th century. Another special feature is the collection of Stone Age and Bronze Age cup-marked stones: Ellbögen has the largest concentration of these cup-marked stones in Tyrol and Austria. Alongside the ecclesiastical evidence, this gives the village's history a distinctly older connection.

The former mining industry is also documented at specific locations. Around 1600, iron ore was mined in the Viggar and Arztal valleys. Strongly deteriorated remains can still be seen in both valleys; they are known as “Knappenlöcher.” The term refers to the historical traces of mining, while their current condition should explicitly be distinguished from fully preserved facilities.

Alpine Pastures, Trails, and Different Starting Points

The Arztaler Alm is located at an altitude of 1,900 meters in the valley of the same name in the Tux Alps, east of Ellbögen. From Oberellbögen, it can be reached from the Hinterlarcher parking lot via a hiking trail in about 1.5 hours. This provides a specific starting point for planning a day trip, which is not the same as the starting point for the hike to the Meissnerhaus.

In summer, Ellbögen has a well-signposted network of trails for hikes and cycling tours of varying difficulty levels. This means that choosing a suitable destination does not depend on a single route. One documented cycling tour starts in Ellbögen and leads south of Patscherkofel to the Profeglalm. The two destinations have different starting points: The Arztaler Alm is reached from the Hinterlarcher parking lot in Oberellbögen via a hiking trail, while the cycling tour starts in Ellbögen. The Profeglalm (Ochsenalm) lies at an elevation of more than 1,800 meters on the slope of the Morgenkogel.

The Meissnerhaus in Different Seasons

The Meissnerhaus is a Category I Alpine Club hut at an altitude of 1,720 meters in the Viggartal south of Patscherkofel near Innsbruck. Hikers and mountain bikers visit it in summer. The hike to the Meissnerhaus begins at the paid parking lot in Ellbögen/Mühltal. In winter, it is a meeting point for ski tourers, snowshoe hikers, and tobogganers.

Local Character and Culinary Connection

The Gasthof Neuwirt is also part of the local character. Dishes made from “Duxer Ochsen” beef are served there. This specific culinary connection complements the historical and scenic points of reference that can help you assess Ellbögen as a place to stay.
