Hochgurgl: Timmelsjoch, Museum and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Hochgurgl
When planning a trip to Hochgurgl, you can choose from a range of different experiences: the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road, with its changing landscapes; the TOP Mountain Motorcycle Museum; and trails to high-alpine destinations. If you are looking for accommodation in Hochgurgl, these differences can help you plan your excursions according to your interests and abilities. The road is open to traffic seasonally, the museum combines a collection with multimedia features, and the hike to the Top Mountain Star calls for specific experience and equipment. This can help you decide whether you would prefer to plan a road trip, a cultural stop or a mountain hike.
Scenery and Stops Along the Timmelsjoch
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road leads from the green alpine meadows and slopes covered in alpine roses in Hochgurgl into barren, high-alpine terrain. This change defines the road’s scenic character: vegetated slopes and barren high-mountain landscapes lie side by side. The road is open to traffic only in the summer months, usually from late May to October; the weather may affect when it opens. If you are planning your drive in advance, check the current opening period before setting off.
The Timmelsjoch Experience includes five stops where architectural sculptures explain the region’s nature, history, culture, society and economy. This brings together two distinct perspectives: the visible change in the landscape and a thematic introduction to the region. If you would like to consider the regional context as well as the scenery along the road, the stops can add this aspect to your plans.
Motorcycle History at 2,175 Metres
The TOP Mountain Motorcycle Museum is located at an altitude of 2,175 m. It displays 580 historic motorcycles and 40 vehicles; the attractions also include a 4D cinema and technology simulations. Alongside its collection, the museum therefore offers multimedia features. Motorcycle history enthusiasts will find the exhibits at the heart of the museum; the cinema and simulations provide additional ways to engage with technology. Its high-altitude location also places a visit within Hochgurgl’s alpine setting.
Top Mountain Star: Lift Access or Mountain Hike
The fully glazed Top Mountain Star stands on a narrow ridge on the Wurmkogl at an altitude of 3,030 m. From there, the view stretches across the Ötztal Alps to the Dolomites. Skiers can reach the Top Mountain Star on the Wurmkoglbahn II lift. The hike from Hochgurgl is a different option: it starts above Hochgurgl, leads into the Königstal valley and follows the Königsbach stream into the valley. The narrow, rocky trail then climbs steeply to the Top Mountain Star.
The hike is classified as a moderately difficult mountain trail and is intended for experienced mountain hikers with sure footing. Good physical condition, mountain hiking experience and suitable equipment are required. This makes an important distinction for planning an excursion: skiers can take the Wurmkoglbahn II, while the hiking route has specific requirements. The high altitude, narrow ridge and described route each give the destination a distinct character.
Hiking Destination: KirchenkarhĂĽtte
Another destination is the Kirchenkarhütte. The hike starts behind the TOP Mountain Crosspoint and leads directly to the hut. The bottom station of the Kirchenkarbahn I is integrated into the TOP Mountain Crosspoint. This gives you a named starting point to use when planning the hike. By comparison, the described hike to the Top Mountain Star starts above Hochgurgl and leads through the Königstal valley along the Königsbach. The two routes therefore differ in their stated starting points and destinations: one leads to the Kirchenkarhütte, the other to the Top Mountain Star on the Wurmkogl.
