Thierbach: Hiking Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Thierbach
Thierbach lies at an altitude of 1,150 metres and is the highest village in the Wildschönau and, at the same time, in the Kitzbühel Alps. Hiking trails, the parish church and the forest and family trail offer different ways to get to know the village. The traditional Sollererwirt inn, which serves regional specialities, is another highlight. This gives you a sense of Thierbach for your stay through its elevation, trails and local history.
Hiking trails and starting points
Gratlspitze is the local mountain of the people of Thierbach. A hike to Gratlspitze starts at Klinglerhof, passes the Klingler Chapel and continues to the Brixlegger Holzalm, which serves food and drinks. Several specific landmarks along the route help you find your way. Check the conditions and whether the Holzalm is open before setting off.
The Hösljoch / Holzalm loop also starts either in the centre of Thierbach or in Hinterthierbach at Klinglerhof. Choosing a starting point is a clear distinction between the two options. Klinglerhof is also the starting point for the hike to Gratlspitze. On the loop, the trail follows the so-called Kupfersteig, a narrow path at the foot of Gratlspitz, to Kaiserbründl. Route details may change; check the latest route description before your hike.
At Kaiserbründl, an information board tells visitors about the region's rich mining history. Ore was mined in the region until 1861. This information refers to the region and adds a historical dimension to the route description. Thierbach is also a starting point for a mountain bike tour or a hike to Schatzberg. If you plan to visit Schatzberg, you can choose between these two activities—mountain biking and hiking; check current trail conditions in advance.
The Thierbach Forest and Family Trail features activity and relaxation spots, an energy tree and a forest playground. These trail features give it a different focus from the routes to Gratlspitze, Holzalm or Schatzberg. You can take these different themes into account when planning, without inferring walking times or difficulty levels from the trail names.
Parish church and village history
The Koglweg Thierbach starts and ends at Thierbach Parish Church. If you are planning to take this trail, check local conditions for access to the church. The history of the church can also be traced through several specific milestones: construction of the parish church began in 1791. In 1829, at the age of 19, Alois Hörbiger of Hörbighof in Thierbach built the first organ for his home church. The altarpiece of Saint Michael was painted by Josef Gold of Salzburg around 1880. Taken together, these details span the start of construction, the building of the organ and sacred art of the late 19th century.
Crafts and regional specialities
Thierbach's craft heritage includes the restoration of the roof of a historic building using traditional wooden-shingle techniques. The shingles are weighted down with stones to provide the best possible protection from wind and weather. Alongside the hiking trails and parish church, this traditional building method is part of the village's cultural history.
The traditional Sollererwirt inn offers a culinary experience in a cosy atmosphere, with regional specialities such as Wildschönau Krautinger. As the menu may change, ask about the specialities currently on offer before visiting.
