History and cultural heritage of the Lipizzaners
Since 1920, Piber has been the birthplace of the famous Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School. In the same year, the Federal Stud Farm at Piber became the successor stud farm to the old Imperial Stud Farm in Lipica. The year therefore represents two distinct historical facts: the stallions’ birthplace and the stud farm’s institutional succession. This makes it possible to place Piber’s history in context both through the Lipizzaners and through the development of the stud farm.
As a UNESCO national intangible cultural heritage, the Lipizzaner Stud Farm preserves centuries-old knowledge about breeding and raising Lipizzaners. The stud farm’s museum provides information about the raising, lives and care of the Lipizzaners, both at the stud farm and at the Spanish Riding School. Your visit therefore connects the history of the place with concrete insights into the subjects covered by the museum.
Visiting the stud farm and other activities
When visiting the Lipizzaner Stud Farm, you can see the inner courtyard of the stud farm as well as historic carriages and sleighs in the coach house. If you are particularly interested in historic vehicles, the coach house is one of the specific stops on this visit. The stud farm is generally accessible to visitors who use wheelchairs. Because of slight inclines and the hilly terrain, a visit with a companion is recommended; take this into account when planning.
Piber Climbing Park has more than 60 stations and complements the stud farm’s attractions with a different kind of activity. Another option for planning is the Maestoso Circular Trail, which connects Köflach, Bärnbach and the Lipizzaner Stud Farm at Piber on a varied tour. The route thus takes in several named locations. Check the route details before setting off so that your plans are based on the current route.
Getting there and finding accommodation
By public transport, the Lipizzaner Stud Farm at Piber can be reached by taking the S7 S-Bahn to Köflach station and then the RegioBus 702 to the Piber Schloss stop. The journey consists of two consecutive sections; include the transfer between the S-Bahn and bus in your travel plans. As routes and timetables may change, check the connection before setting off.
If you plan to travel by public transport, also take into account the connection via Köflach and the Piber Schloss stop. This lets you align your search and travel plans with the places you want to visit without conflating the individual attractions.
