Seckau – Culture, Trails and Cross-Country Skiing in the Seckau Alps

Culture and spiritual heritage

The town's defining cultural destination is Seckau Benedictine Abbey. Its history dates back more than 850 years. Seckau Basilica has been a place of prayer and the search for God for 860 years. The abbey also houses the permanent exhibition “World of the Monks”, which provides a distinct focus for your visit. The Habsburg Mausoleum is one of the particularly noteworthy sights of Seckau Benedictine Abbey. The abbey grounds thus combine history, sacred sites and a permanent exhibition.

Trails through the landscape and town

Weiermoarteich is a natural pond at the foot of the Seckau Alps. A circular hiking trail through Seckau passes directly by it. The approximately 1.5-kilometre Chakren hiking trail offers views of the Seckau Alps.

The Tremmelberg circuit starts in Seckau. Its descent leads via the Calvary Church and then along the Zentralalpenweg trail back to Seckau.

Cross-country skiing with different levels of difficulty

Two cross-country ski trails with different lengths and difficulty levels are available. The Tremmelberg trail is 7.5 kilometres long and classified as moderate to difficult. The Panorama trail measures 5.2 kilometres and is classified as easy to moderate.

In addition, the Seckau cross-country ski trail offers classic and skating tours when there is sufficient snow cover. Classic and skating refer to two different forms of cross-country skiing. Snow cover is a prerequisite; this does not constitute a general statement about current skiability or whether trails are open.

Pilgrimage, views and other experiences

Maria Schnee Hochalm is a pilgrimage chapel in the Seckau Alps and lies at an altitude of 1,880 metres. Pilgrimage services are held annually at Maria Schnee Hochalm. Another distinctive viewpoint is the “Turm im Gebirge”, or “Tower Power”. It is located on Tremmelberg, is 41 metres high and offers views across the Murtal valley, of parts of the Red Bull Ring and of the Murtal mountain landscape.

The first section of the “Nimm´s Radl 05 - Seckau-Gaal Runde” leads from Seckau to Gaal along fields, farmsteads and forests, offering views of the surrounding mountains. The second section leads from Seckau via St. Martha, Feistritz and Kobenz back to Seckau.
