Deutschlandsberg lies in the heart of western Styria and is surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests.

Landscape around the Castle and Klause

The Deutschlandsberg Klause is a romantic rocky valley west of Deutschlandsberg. The Laßnitz flows through the Klause. A footpath leads past a hermitage that was never inhabited and continues uphill to Deutschlandsberg Castle. The Deutschlandsberg Klause is home to ecologically significant plant communities as well as numerous species of herbs, ferns and mosses.

The Deutschlandsberg Klause is freely accessible every day; sturdy footwear is recommended, and access is at your own risk. Deutschlandsberg Castle rises on a rocky spur of land that is well protected by its natural location. Deutschlandsberg Castle is considered a landmark of Deutschlandsberg and offers an impressive view.

Castle Museum and Historic Walks

Archaeological finds provide evidence of more than 6,500 years of settlement in the area later occupied by Deutschlandsberg Castle. The Archeo Norico Castle Museum is housed in Deutschlandsberg Castle and presents eight exhibitions. A treasure hunt leads through the museum in the medieval knight's castle and covers the themes of Celts, Romans and the Middle Ages.

The Deutschlandsberg Old Town Walk leads around the elongated main square. The Deutschlandsberg city walk can be reached by S-Bahn S6/61 to Deutschlandsberg or by RegioBus 760 to the Deutschlandsberg Rathaus stop.

Wine Trails and Regional History

The Deutschlandsberg Wine Education Trail is a 3.5 km hike. It starts at the main square, leads through vineyards and extends as far as Deutschlandsberg Castle. The Deutschlandsberg Wine Education Trail combines interesting information about viticulture with a wine tasting.

The Schilcher Wine Road is approximately 40 km long and leads through the districts of Voitsberg and Deutschlandsberg. It passes through Wildbach and continues through vineyards to the Schilcher town of Deutschlandsberg. Wildbach Castle is not open to the public. Its history dates back to the 13th century; the façades and interior feature rich Baroque and Rococo decoration. The history of Frauenthal Castle dates back to the middle of the 16th century.

Culinary Delights, Golf and Forest

Deutschlandsberg is known as the Schilcher capital; Schilcher, a wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape, thrives particularly well here. At the Farmer-Rabensteiner vlg. Graf agricultural oil mill, Styrian pumpkin seed oil is produced in the traditional way. At the Farmer-Rabensteiner vlg. Graf culinary farm, 60 different types of homemade vinegar are produced, including pumpkin vinegar.

The Golfclub Schloss Frauenthal has an 18-hole golf course in the Schilcherland Deutschlandsberg region. At the Schloss Frauenthal golf course, holes 1 to 11 are located in the castle park; holes 12 to 18 extend into the hilly landscape of western Styria.

Two hiking trails lead directly past the Bad Gams Kneipp site. At the Bad Gams Kneipp site, visitors can walk in the cold water and take arm baths; the site is located in the middle of the forest.

Deutschlandsberg Theatre Centre

The focuses of the theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg include progressive theatre that is formally and thematically interesting, the involvement of specialists in acting, directing, set design and technology, as well as continuous work with young people. The theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg was established in 1981 from various local theatre groups and became the cultural association “theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg” in 1986.
