Winter holidays and getting to Katschberg

The nearby Katschberg ski resort is easily reached from Unternberg by ski bus or car. Factor your choice of transport into your daily plans. If you are travelling with children and equipment, it may help to think through your usual routine for the outward and return journeys in advance, then decide whether the ski bus or car suits you better. Check the timetable and seasonal transport services before travelling, as these arrangements can change.

Winter trails and other activities

Unternberg has winter hiking trails, and a cross-country ski trail also runs along the Murtal near Unternberg. These are two different ways to enjoy winter exercise: walking on winter trails or cross-country skiing on the trail. Hiking trails, varied cycling tours, Nordic walking and mountain biking are also among the activities available in Unternberg. You can include these as separate activities if you are considering more than one focus for exercise during your trip.

Moosham Castle: location and visits

Moosham Castle stands above Unternberg in the Murtal, on a rocky hill on the wooded Mitterberg. It is Salzburg’s third-largest castle complex. Remains of a Roman settlement were discovered at Moosham Castle. The castle’s sights include the princely rooms, which were intended for visits by the archbishops.

The museum at Moosham Castle is open Tuesday to Sunday. Visits are possible only as part of a guided tour for groups of at least two people. Check the current dates before your visit and take the minimum group size into account when planning.

Church, landscape and local culture

St. Ulrich Parish Church also offers historical points of interest. A place of worship stood there by the 15th century at the latest. A bell dating from 1431 hangs in the tower of the present-day church. A Romanesque cross from the 12th century was installed in the church in 1984; it is on loan from the Prodingerbauer farm in Tamsweg. The details about the bell and cross bring different periods of local church history to life.

The Mooshamer Moos in Unternberg is designated a protected landscape area. The Erlebnisreich Mur recreation area on the Mur River invites visitors in Unternberg to relax and enjoy nature. Local traditions also shape what the area has to offer: the Unternberg Bauernherbst is part of the summer cultural and traditional programme. If you are planning your stay outside the winter season, you can take this summer highlight into account when considering your trip.
