Hinterweisspriach: Longa, Trails and Wirpitschsee
Accommodation in Hinterweisspriach
For a stay, Hinterweisspriach can be explored mainly through the Longa, the hike to Wirpitschsee and the cycling routes in the Weißpriachtal. The routes described have different starting points and transitions between cycling and walking. This distinction makes planning easier without treating the individual routes as one continuous tour.
The Longa and the landscape
In the surrounding area, the entire Longa area was designated a protected landscape area because of the unique meanders of the Longa stream. The protection therefore covers the area as a whole; it was established because of the stream’s meanders. Hinterweißpriach is also home to the Seekreuz Chapel. It adds a specific cultural landmark in the village to the landscape experience.
The waterfalls also offer different highlights. Nearby, the Uln Waterfall lies just beyond the Ulnhütte; when water levels are sufficient, it is a popular photo spot. At Glücksplatzl, the usually gentle-flowing Longa plunges noisily into the depths. Water flow and the appearance of the waterfalls may change seasonally.
On foot to Wirpitschsee
The “Weißpriach: Wirpitschsee” hike follows the clear Longa to Wirpitschsee at an elevation of 1,699 metres. It starts at a car park in Hinterweißpriach. To drive to Wirpitschsee, follow the road to the Znachtal junction; there, continue left to the last car park, which is enclosed by a fence. Road and parking regulations may change. Check the conditions before setting off.
On the bike-and-hike route to Wirpitschsee, the cycling section ends at the Ulnhütte. Leave your bikes there and continue hiking towards the Tonimörtlhütte and Wirpitschsee. The hiking section beyond the Ulnhütte passes a waterfall, crosses the Longa and then follows a marked trail into the forest. The transition from cycling to walking is therefore part of planning the tour.
Cycling routes and activities by the water
The cycle route to Hinterweißpriach leads from the village centre through the Schwaig district and along the Longa to Hinterweißpriach. In the village, the route follows the turquoise Longa from the toll barrier into the upper Weißpriachtal. The ride into the upper valley follows wide gravel and alpine pasture tracks and is suitable for mountain bikes and gravel bikes. There is also a rest area with benches along the cycle route to Hinterweißpriach.
In the upper Weißpriachtal, there is a Kneipp facility by the cold, clear Longa. In the surrounding area, the Longa is also a destination for fly fishing. During a hike, its banks provide opportunities to take a break. The same river therefore offers different options: a facility in the upper valley, a fishing opportunity nearby and places to rest during a hike.
