Obertauern: Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Experiences

The Obertauern ski area has more than 100 kilometres of well-maintained pistes. The runs are suitable for beginners, intermediate skiers and highly experienced skiers. This means that different ability levels can find suitable runs in the same ski area without everyone having to choose the same difficulty level.

Skiing and ski circuits in Obertauern

Modern lift facilities provide access to even the highest peaks in the Obertauern ski area. The Tauernrunde comprises two signposted ski circuits: the red route runs clockwise around the ski area, while the green route runs in the opposite direction. The routes differ in their direction of travel and form circuits around the ski area. This allows you to combine individual runs with a designated circuit during a day of skiing. The winter activities also include almost 70 kilometres of excellently groomed cross-country ski trails. Those who do not want to ski exclusively on alpine slopes or who are travelling in a mixed group can therefore also enjoy cross-country skiing, winter hikes or snowshoe hikes during their stay. Guided snowshoe tours are also available in Obertauern. In addition to alpine skiing, this provides several independent winter activities and a guided tour option.

Winter experiences for spending time together

After taking the Grünwaldkopfbahn cable car to the high plateau, visitors can use pedal boats on Grünwaldsee. SUPs are available free of charge for use at Krummschnabelsee. Around both lakes, Bobby’s Erlebniswelt offers activity stations for children, including a stilts course, a raft trip across Krummschnabelsee and the exploration of underground marmot burrows. The activities at the two lakes therefore range from water activities to several stations for children. The Stoneman Taurista mountain bike challenge passes through Obertauern. Mountain carts descend along winding gravel paths; collection and instruction take place at the mountain station of the Kringsalmbahn.

Getting there and other local features

From Radstadt railway station, onward travel to Obertauern is possible by Postbus or taxi. Bus route 280 stops directly at the Grünwaldkopf valley station. The Obertauern-Hundsfeldmoor nature reserve and European protected area lies immediately north of the village. It provides a habitat for rare animal and plant species, including the bluethroat (Luscinia svecica svecica) and the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius). In the Seekar area, an information board commemorates the former mining of silver and copper; the mines were finally abandoned in 1910. In March 1965, Obertauern was also a filming location for the Beatles film “Help!”. The village’s history therefore encompasses both former mining and a later connection to film history. The Tauernbrennerei distillery offers a tasting with an introduction to the art of distilling at its show distillery in the Alte Alm; fruit brandies, spirits and liqueurs are presented there.
