Waldegg an der Piesting lies on the northern side of Hohe Wand. When planning a trip, the main highlights are hiking trails with different estimated times, a hike to Waldeggerhaus, and local cultural and natural features. Two trails marked in yellow and classified as easy can be compared by distance and duration; other trails lead to Einhornhöhle in Dreistetten and Hohe Wand. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer a shorter hike, a mountain hike with named waypoints, or the community’s cultural heritage.

Hiking Trails and Choosing a Tour

Trail 02, “Auf ´s Zimmermannplatzl,” is marked in yellow, is about 6 kilometers long, and takes around 1 hour and 50 minutes. The Dürnbacher Waterfall Trail, also marked in yellow, is shorter at approximately 4.7 kilometers and around 1 hour and 10 minutes. Both trails are classified as easy. These approximate figures provide a basis for comparison: according to the stated times, the Waterfall Trail takes less time, while the Zimmermannplatzl Trail covers more distance and involves a longer walking time. If you plan your day around either trail, treat the distance and duration as estimates, not exact time requirements.

Well-marked trails continue from Zimmermannplatzl to Einhornhöhle in Dreistetten and Hohe Wand. The hike from Waldegg to Waldeggerhaus follows a different route: it leads via Dürnberg, Bockleiten, and Große Klause to Hohe Wand. The ascent follows mountain hiking trails through pleasantly quiet forests. The Waldegger Steig through Große Klause is a separate, secured via ferrata. It is rated difficulty A and requires sure-footedness—a different type of tour from the two trails classified as easy.

The starting points are also relevant when planning. The DĂĽrnbacher Waterfall Trail starts at the DĂĽrnbach stop; drivers are advised to park near the church. The hike to Waldeggerhaus starts at Waldegg/Piesting station, where parking is available. This lets you plan your journey around the specific tour and take the stated starting points and parking options into account.

Cycling Trail, Schwarzviertel, and Natural Monument

A long and exceptionally attractive section of the Piestingtal Cycle Trail runs through the municipality of Waldegg. There, the trail passes over Kirchenriegl into Schwarzviertel and continues to the Kalksinterader natural monument. The modern Elisabeth Chapel is located right beside the Kalksinterader on the Biedermeier Cycle Trail, in the so-called Schwarzviertel—the oldest part of the municipality. The cycle trail, natural monument, and chapel are therefore all found in this named area.

Black Pine and Pitch Production

A black pine more than 845 years old stands within the municipality; it is the oldest in Austria whose age has been determined. The black pine is also part of the region’s history: black pines shaped the landscape of southern Lower Austria. Pitch production, which relied on these trees for generations, provided a livelihood for more than 7,000 families in the region. This tradition also has recognized cultural heritage status: in 2011, the Austrian Commission for UNESCO declared pitch production in Lower Austria part of the national intangible cultural heritage.

The Waldegger Cultural Days add to the municipality’s cultural offerings. Waldegg holds them every year in October; the exact dates may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around the Cultural Days, check the event dates in advance. This helps distinguish the recurring October tradition from the specific dates relevant to your travel plans.
