The UNESCO World Heritage Centre House of Wilderness offers an independent nature experience. Using modern technology, the exhibition provides insights into the largest primeval forest in the Alpine region, located in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area. The wilderness area itself may only be entered as part of guided hikes and along marked paths. This restriction is important for planning because visiting the centre and staying in the protected area are subject to different rules. Free car parks are available directly in front of the House of Wilderness. By public transport, the House of Wilderness can be reached via the Lunz am See Schulen bus stop. Lake Lunzer See and the lakeside stage

The emerald-green Lake Lunzer See is Lower Austria’s only natural lake and lies at the foot of imposing mountains. The Lunz lido offers swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Lunzer See. During the day, the lakeside stage is accessible to bathers as a sun island. Its origins are also documented: Hans Kupelwieser’s lakeside stage was conceived by the wellenklængen in 2004 and built by the municipality of Lunz. The lake therefore combines a natural setting, bathing facilities and a distinct cultural venue.

Culture and regional history

The Amonhaus was built by Master Ofner in 1551 in the Renaissance style. The manor house, dating from the mid-16th century, has an original smoke kitchen and magnificent rooms. At the Hammerherrenmuseum Lunz, special exhibits, clothing, pictures and documents convey an impression of the working and everyday lives of the ironmasters, as well as farmers, charcoal burners and woodcutters. The Frauenkirche ze Lunz was first mentioned in 1392. These destinations add specific historical themes to a stay rather than categorising the town solely through its landscape and winter sports.

Cycle paths and alternative activities

The 55-kilometre central section of the Ybbstal Cycle Path between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See follows the route of the former Ybbstal railway. It is completely flat, runs away from motor traffic and remains close to the river throughout. The Mostviertler Schienenradl starts at the railway station in Lunz am See and follows narrow-gauge railway tracks along the Ybbs towards Göstling, reaching the Klein Großau turnaround station after just under 5 kilometres.
