Dorfstetten: Forests, Hiking Trails and Local Experiences
Accommodation in Dorfstetten
Dorfstetten combines a forested landscape with hiking trails and cultural and leisure activities. On the southern edge of the Weinsberg Forest, in the upper reaches of the small Ysper Valley, dark fir and spruce forests shape the village and its scattered settlements. Numerous viewpoints, natural monuments and distinctive landscape features complete the picture.
Forest Landscapes and Hikes
Dorfstetten is a starting point for numerous hikes. The trailhead for the hiking routes and ample free parking are located at the church square. One specific route is the Burgsteinmauer Trail No. 94, which runs through the high forest to Burgsteinmauer. The strenuous ascent leads over rough and rocky terrain and rewards hikers with magnificent views.
For a walk, you can explore the many small monuments on foot, for example along the signposted meditation trail. Another option is the Hinteredt Hike No. 96, which leads to Hubertus Chapel, about 200 metres beyond the forester’s lodge. This offers a choice of different destinations, from a walk to see small monuments to a route with a strenuous climb. When choosing a route, you can use its stated destination and character as a guide.
Mills, Sawmill and Parish Church
The Dorfstetten leisure area is home to a working show mill and a Venetian sawmill with original historic exhibits. Guided tours clearly demonstrate how grain becomes bread and tree trunks become planks. Group tours of both facilities are available by arrangement for groups of ten or more. Groups are therefore advised to arrange their visit in advance.
The parish church of St Ulrich offers a different insight into local history. Dedicated to Saint Ulrich, its oldest sections of masonry date back to the 14th century. A Baroque onion dome combines with Gothic tracery windows on the church building. The Catholic parish church and cemetery are protected as historic monuments by decree. The architecture reveals different styles of construction in one place, while the mill and sawmill illustrate traditional processes.
Natural Attractions and Leisure Activities
The landscaped pond is surrounded by idyllic natural scenery and invites visitors to relax and linger throughout the year. Right next to it, the nature playground gives children plenty of space to play and run around. A natural bowling alley has been part of the leisure area since May 2025. It is suitable for families, groups of friends, club evenings or an active afternoon.
The 3D course operated by Bogensport Waldviertel covers an approximately 14-hectare woodland area on the outskirts of the village. Archers can test their accuracy at 30 targets. The course is open year-round, weather and snow conditions permitting. Bow rental, including the necessary equipment, and a brief introductory session are available by prior arrangement. Dorfstetten also has a direct connection to the riding trail networks of Mühlviertler Alm and Pferdeparadies Waldviertler Hochland.
Regional Products
Honighaus Frasl produces various types of honey, beeswax candles, propolis drops, mead, honey vinegar and oxymel. Products are available to buy in the farm’s own shop. The selection goes beyond honey to include bee products and processed goods. Group tours of the show mill and sawmill must be arranged in advance; prior registration is required for the brief archery introduction.
