The five-kilometre Edelberg circular trail starts in the market square in Aggsbach Markt. The 355-metre-high Edelberg is located in the municipality of Aggsbach-Markt in the Wachau, on the left bank of the Danube. The two figures refer to different things: five kilometres is the length of the loop, while 355 metres is the mountain’s elevation. This makes it easy to distinguish the route length from the elevation when planning.

Hiking: Circular Trails and the Jauerling Route

The Bireben circular trail follows an unpaved forest path through a mixed hornbeam and oak woodland. The two circular trails have different features: the Edelberg trail is notable for its length and starting point, while the Bireben trail stands out for its path surface and woodland type. When comparing the trails, you can therefore consider whether route length and starting point or the character of the forest path is more important for your plans.

The Jauerling Route 02 runs from Aggsbach Markt to Maria Laach. It passes through woodland and meadows, past secluded hamlets and up to the Jauerling plateau. Sturdy hiking boots, rain protection, and sufficient drinks and provisions are recommended for this hike. This recommendation applies to the equipment and supplies needed for this particular route.

Aggsbach Markt railway station lies at the foot of the Jauerling, in the heart of the Wachau. This provides another geographical reference point in the landscape, in addition to the starting point of the Edelberg circular trail.

Parish Church and Wachau Cultural History

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1286 and 1300. In 1724, after a period as a popular pilgrimage church, it was elevated to the status of an independent parish church. The construction period and elevation mark distinct stages in its history: the church’s creation and, later, its elevation to an independent parish.

Architecturally, the church is a former late Romanesque, flat-ceilinged, three-aisled pillar basilica with a raised nave and Gothic rib vaulting. “Three-aisled” describes its division into three aisles; the nave is raised above the side aisles. A rib vault can be identified by the intersecting ribs in its structure. The church also has two Romanesque portals. Its basic form, vaulting and portals offer different ways to appreciate its architecture.

The themed trail in Aggsbach Markt outlines the cultural history of the Wachau across twelve information panels. It offers a distinct way to explore regional history, alongside the architectural and ecclesiastical history of the parish church.
