If you choose Treffen am Ossiacher See for a winter sports stay, the Gerlitzen Alpe is the most important documented point of reference: in winter, it is a family-friendly ski area. From Treffen, the 12 km Gerlitzen toll road leads directly to the middle station of the Kanzelbahn cable car. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether the Gerlitzen Alpe is the main focus of your stay or whether you would like to combine winter sports with nature and cultural experiences.

Winter in and around Treffen

During the warmer months, the Gerlitzen Alpe offers hiking trails and mountain huts. In winter, it is described as a family-friendly ski area. For a different winter activity, snowshoe hikes are possible in Verditz; in summer, gentle hikes are suitable there. This distinction is important when planning your stay because it separates different seasons and forms of activity without presupposing any particular equipment, snow conditions or opening status.

The route to the three Finsterbach waterfalls also adds to the selection away from the ski area. It leads uphill through a forest of spruce and deciduous trees and across four bridges. Along the way are Finsterbachfall, Schleierfall and Kesselfall. Those who would like to experience the forest more consciously will find the Spiritual Forest Trail at the Ortenfelshütte, with seven stations where visitors can perceive the forest with all their senses.

Lake, Cycling Path and Sculptures

From Treffen, you can use the 27-kilometre cycling path around Lake Ossiach. This provides a clearly defined opportunity, in addition to the mountain and winter activities, to explore the surrounding area along a longer route by the lake. Another cultural highlight is the “From the River to the Lake” project of the Krastal Sculpture Trail. This open-air gallery runs from Treffen to Weissenstein. The Krastal Sculpture Trail comprises 15 stone artworks.

In the historically significant quarry near Villach, the Krastal artwork provides space for international artists. There, they work with stone as a material and use cross-disciplinary approaches. The address is Krastaler Straße 24, 9541 Treffen am Ossiacher See. The natural setting of the Krastal marble quarry was regularly used for theatre performances in summer; this statement describes a former use and not a current events calendar.

Church and Museum as Cultural Additions

The Catholic Parish Church of St. Maximilian combines several historical layers. The nave walls and the tower foundation that are still preserved today date from the 12th century. Since its renovation in 1812, the interior has been classified as Neoclassical. The Pilz & Elli Riehl Doll Museum is also located in the village of Winklern in Treffen am Ossiacher See. Many handmade dolls from the former “Elli Riehl Doll World” have found a new home there. The designation “former” remains part of the historical classification.
