Feldkirchen between lakes, the Nockalm Road and culture
Accommodation in Feldkirchen
During your stay in Feldkirchen, nature experiences, routes to lakes and mountains, and regional culture come together within a compact thematic area. The 34-kilometre Nockalm Road runs between Innerkrems and Ebene Reichenau and can be travelled by car, motorcycle or bus. Along the road, you can discover numerous free exhibitions and themed trails. It is also home to the largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forest in the eastern Alps. The route therefore offers specific starting points for excursions where landscape, activity and regional interpretation come together.

Hiking trails for different levels of ability
In Steuerberg, a circular hiking trail leads to St. John’s Church, continues to the Bösensteiner Waterfall and then returns around Lake Goggausee. The Bösensteiner Waterfall is considered a special natural gem in Steuerberg. Well-marked and numbered hiking trails also run through the surrounding area from Steuerberg and Wachsenberg. If you would like to compare different walking times, Falkertsee offers both short and longer options: the circuit around the lake takes about 30 minutes, while the Falkertsee–Moschelitzen–Falkertsee circular route takes three to four hours and therefore requires considerably more time. Falkertsee is also the starting point for many short and day hikes.
There are also clearly described destinations for shared activities with children. The 3 Lakes Trail is designed as a family hiking experience and features information boards about alpine nature, flora and fauna. On Turracher Höhe, the trail leads past Lake Turracher See, Lake Grünsee and Lake Schwarzsee. Falkert is also home to the Heidi Alm children’s adventure park, with more than 100 figures along a circular route. The different trail lengths help you plan an excursion according to the time available and the desired level of intensity, without equating short walks with longer day tours.
Lakes, wildlife and outdoor trails
Lake Goggausee complements the hiking destinations with activities that vary by season: in summer, it invites visitors to swim, fish and go boating, while in winter it is suitable for ice skating. Motorboats are not permitted on Lake Maltschacher See. One section of the Slow Trail at Lake Maltschacher See leads through the vineyards of Trippelgut; benches, a viewing platform and information boards are also part of this trail. The undeveloped shores of Lake Maltschacher See provide a habitat for protected bird and fish species. The Bleistätter Moor nature reserve is also interesting for observing nature, as it is home to more than 100 different bird species as well as butterflies, bats and beavers.
At Lake Ossiacher See, landscape and activity can be combined on a longer circuit. The lake is 11 kilometres long and has a shoreline of 25 kilometres; it can be circumnavigated by bike on a circular route. In Glanegg, you will find a dedicated network of bridleways as well as well-maintained, wooded hiking and cycling trails. These destinations appeal to different interests: cycling, horse riding, hiking, observing animals or activities on the water. When planning your hotel stay in Feldkirchen, it is therefore particularly relevant which of these excursion options you would like to make use of during your stay.
Culture, history and regional tradition
In addition to nature trails, Feldkirchen and the surrounding towns offer specific cultural and historical destinations. The Bamberger Amthof now serves as a cultural and event centre. The collections of the Amthof Museum in Feldkirchen cover prehistoric eras, the Roman period and Gothic objects. Other themes include mills, flax and linen, customs and traditional dress. The Carinthian Summer music festival was founded in 1969 at Ossiach Abbey on Lake Ossiacher See. The abbey itself was founded in 1024 and is associated with a Romanesque abbey church and Baroque works of art.
Another historical stop is Glanegg Castle Ruins. Its history stretches back more than 900 years; it was an important fortress as well as an aristocratic residence. A pilgrimage site is located in St. Lorenzen. On 15 August, a pilgrimage leads from Ebene Reichenau to St. Anne’s Church in St. Lorenzen. This is followed by a large traditional outdoor event without amplification, connected with the old tradition of wrestling. For planning your day, you can therefore combine nature trails, historical sites and regional events with different focuses.
Orientation for your stay
For the Nockberge Biosphere Park, Feldkirchen in Carinthia is considered the nearest railway station; Ebene Reichenau Ort/Friedhof is listed as the bus stop. The Nockmobil can be booked between 08:00 and 20:00. The administration of the Nockberge Biosphere Park provides hiking maps, information about nature, the current events programme, as well as information about accommodation providers, restaurants and excursion destinations in the region around the biosphere park. This orientation complements the specific destinations on site, but does not replace information about the distance to or accessibility of individual excursions from your accommodation.
Culinary impressions are also part of the regional destinations: along and around the 3 Lakes Trail on Turracher Höhe, innkeepers offer Carinthian and Styrian specialities, Brettljause, regional dishes and Swiss stone pine schnapps. The Feldkirchen/Ossiacher See Air Sports Club offers another special view of Feldkirchen and the surrounding area. It offers sightseeing flights over Feldkirchen and the surrounding area in touring motor gliders, powered aircraft and modern gliders. This allows you to take different priorities into account when choosing your hotel – from a short walk around a lake to longer hikes and cultural experiences, as well as cycling trails, regional cuisine and a winter excursion for ice skating.
