Cross-country skiing is the kind of winter sports. It is both competitive and mass kind of sports and enjoys the great popularity. When a person goes in for cross-country skiing, almost all his muscles and joints are spared. That is why the cross-country skiing is a perfect kind of sports, especially for corpulent people.

The equipment consists of suitable skis, boots and cross-country poles, of course. The skis should be ideally rubbed with wax in order to reduce corrosion and achieve the optimum sliding.

You can practice cross-country skiing practically everywhere during winter vacation and it should be practiced only on a flat road. Cross-country skiing is related to such winter kinds of sports as biathlon, Nordic walking and roller skiing which has gained a grater popularity in the recent years. The classical locomotion ways are the double pole, herringbone, diagonal stride and double pole with kick. The World Cup is held every year from October to March in which both men and women take part. Besides, the Nordic Ski World Championship that combines cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic skiing is held every two years. When it refers to the Olympic Games, then the competition is divided into 6 categories. They include short distances (sprint and team sprint), mass start, pursuit, relay and individual start.

Cross-county skiing is usually held in Nordic countries like Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, however, in Austria, for example, it is also an old tradition to offer cross country skiing with many with many winter trips. Cross-country skiing is not a difficult kind of sports at all and it can be exercised by everyone, even by untrained person. If you plan to combined cross-country skiing with your winter vacation, then you can also practice Nordic walking and jogging at the same time, too.
