Airports for Ski Holidays in Germany: The Alps and Central Uplands
Depending on your destination, different airports may be suitable for a ski holiday in Germany or the neighboring Alpine countries. The flight connection is not the only factor: you should also consider how you will travel from the airport to your accommodation.
Munich (MUC): Bavarian Alps and Tyrol
Munich Airport is a possible starting point for Garmisch-Partenkirchen and other destinations in the Bavarian Alps. It may also be an alternative for some ski areas in Tyrol. Compare the entire journey with options via Innsbruck or Salzburg, including train, bus, rental car and transfer services.
Memmingen (FMM): Allgäu and western Austria
Memmingen is conveniently located for destinations in the Allgäu, including the Oberstdorf area, and may also be worth considering for parts of Vorarlberg. Before booking, check whether there is a suitable connection to your resort on your travel date; a short distance as the crow flies does not necessarily mean an easy transfer.
Friedrichshafen (FDH): Lake Constance, Allgäu and Vorarlberg
Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen may be an option for destinations in the western Allgäu and Vorarlberg. It has fewer flights than major hubs, and services can vary by season and travel date. Be sure to check the specific flight and onward connections.
Cologne/Bonn (CGN): Sauerland
Cologne/Bonn may be an option for Winterberg, Willingen and other destinations in the Sauerland. Compare the journey with other accessible airports, and pay particular attention to the final leg to your accommodation.
Plan your onward journey and luggage
Compare timetables and transfer times for both outbound and return journeys, including the transfer departure point and any changes. Check with your airline whether skis or a snowboard need to be registered and what fees apply. Allow enough time for baggage collection and your onward journey.
