Compare airports for a ski holiday in Austria
Austria has several airports that may serve as starting points, depending on the ski region. Don’t choose based on airfare alone: also check the onward journey to your accommodation and the return trip to the airport.
Innsbruck (INN): Tyrol and the Stubai Valley
Innsbruck is in the heart of Tyrol and can be convenient for destinations in the Inn Valley, the Stubai Valley and parts of the western state. Depending on your resort, you may need to travel by train, bus, rental car or a transfer booked in advance. Compare the journey all the way to your accommodation, not just the distance to the valley.
Salzburg (SZG): Salzburg State and neighboring regions
Salzburg Airport is a good option for destinations in Salzburg State and may also be worth considering for neighboring ski regions. Check connections to places such as Flachau, Saalbach or the KitzbĂĽhel region for your travel date; seasonal services and timetables change.
Linz (LNZ): Upper Austria and Styria
Linz may be an option for ski resorts in Upper Austria, such as Hinterstoder, or for individual destinations in Styria. Whether the journey works for you depends in particular on the connections and the final leg.
Klagenfurt (KLU): Carinthia
Klagenfurt is a possible gateway to ski resorts in Carinthia. Compare the onward journey with options from Salzburg or other accessible airports, and check whether bus and train services to your destination run on your arrival and departure days.
Vienna (VIE): major hub, longer onward journey
Vienna offers many flight connections, but it is significantly farther from many alpine ski resorts than Innsbruck or Salzburg. Factor the train or car journey into your total travel time and check that your arrival time works with your connection.
What to check before booking
Compare the entire journey for your specific dates: flight, connection, transfer to the ski resort and return trip. Also check the rules for ski and snowboard baggage and allow enough time for transfers.
