Tip: Ski holiday in Zakopane 2010/11
Ski holidaymakers and winter sports enthusiasts from Germany in particular should keep the Polish winter resort of Zakopane in mind when planning for the coming season. The town in southern Poland, in the High Tatras holiday region on the border with Slovakia, is increasingly establishing itself as a true winter sports mecca of the East. Spectacular runs and excellent service are available here at unbeatable prices. Compared with the Alpine resorts frequented by the well-heeled, Zakopane has nothing to envy them.
Popular ski resort Zakopane
Zakopane’s growing popularity is largely due to the resort’s development and its adaptation to international standards. It is no coincidence that it had already applied to host the 2006 Winter Olympics, though its bid was unsuccessful. Even so, all the necessary improvements have been made, setting the town apart from the surrounding ski areas, not just regionally. Perfect for a ski holiday.

Three million ski tourists
Nearly three million ski tourists heed the call of Zakopane’s ski slopes during the winter months. Visitors from the West are particularly younger holidaymakers, who have made Zakopane a trendy meeting place for the snowboarding scene. Excellent slopes are matched by top hotels and affordable holiday apartments. It is almost worth staying a little longer. Although spending a ski holiday in Poland rather than in Austria or Switzerland may sound strange at first to die-hard winter sports fans, the trend toward eastern ski resorts is rightly growing. These include not only Zakopane, but also resorts in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The value for money will remain far better next ski season than in the better-known resorts.
Anyone tempted to visit should come in summer to get to know the town. Hikers and nature lovers will also find excellent opportunities to unwind in the surrounding High Tatras National Park. It is also a good time to look for a hotel for the winter and perhaps book early. Since Zakopane is no longer much of a hidden gem, the finest and most exclusive hotels are regularly fully booked for the winter season. However, you can get around this by booking in advance. So now is the best time to decide on a winter holiday in Zakopane for 2010–2011. It’s a choice you won’t regret.
