Ski Resorts Merge in Slovakia

Ski holidays in Slovakia and other countries in Eastern Europe are generally considered very affordable. Last winter, however, this was rarely true of the ski resorts in the High and Low Tatras, as prices rose sharply in Slovakia too following the introduction of the euro. It was not unusual for a ski hotel in Donovaly in the Low Tatras or in other winter sports regions of Slovakia to suddenly charge prices similar to those in the top Alpine resorts of Austria or Switzerland. As a result, many winter sports enthusiasts from neighbouring countries and Germany stayed away, bringing many Slovakian ski resorts to the brink of ruin.

At the start of this winter, however, Slovakia’s ski resorts seem to have learned something from the crisis and found effective, customer-friendly ways to offer ski holidays in the country at very good value for money again. The three resorts of Velka Raca in the Saybusch Beskids, Strbske Pleso in the High Tatras and Park Snow Donovaly in the Low Tatras are prime examples. Thanks to a combined ski pass, tourists can now use all the slopes and cross-country trails at these resorts, making the most of their holiday in Slovakia at attractive prices.

Following the merger, winter sports enthusiasts in Slovakia have access to more than 30 kilometres of downhill slopes, nearly 60 kilometres of cross-country trails, and various other attractions for snowboarders, tobogganers and snowshoers. Most of the slopes and trails in Slovakia are illuminated, so they can also be used at night. There are also various attractions beyond winter sports, such as bungee jumping. The combined ski pass, valid at the Donovaly, Velka Raca and Strbske Pleso winter sports resorts, now costs just 18 euros per person per day this winter—a reasonable price for a ski holiday in the High or Low Tatras.
