Tour de Ramsau – Cross-country skiing event in Styria

2010 gets off to a great start for fans of Nordic skiing, with several top-class events, including the Four Hills Tournament in Germany and Austria, taking place around now, as well as the Tour de Ski, the cross-country skiers’ equivalent of the tournament. While the Tour de Ski is held as part of the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup and is aimed exclusively at the elite, the Tour de Ramsau takes place in Styria from January 15 to 17, 2010, for ambitious recreational skiers. Ramsau am Dachstein is in Austria, at the foot of Rittisberg, where the provinces of Styria, Salzburg and Upper Austria meet, and is considered one of the snowiest ski regions in the country.

The Tour de Ramsau in Styria is a three-day winter sports event in which participants must complete a cross-country ski race each day over different distances and using different techniques. It kicks off on Friday with a prologue covering two kilometers through the cross-country skiing stadium in Ramsau am Dachstein, followed by a 30-kilometer race on Saturday. While all skiers set off alone against the clock for the prologue, the field starts together for the 30-kilometer popular race, where participants can choose the freestyle technique.

The Tour de Ramsau’s greatest challenge may be the final event on Sunday, bringing the winter sports weekend in Styria to a close. Participants must climb around 400 meters in elevation to the summit of Rittisberg using the classic technique. Since the field sets off for the final at Rittisberg in the order and at the intervals determined by the overall standings, the winner of the last stage is also the winner of the Tour de Ramsau. The ski hotels in Ramsau am Dachstein are well prepared for the influx of athletes and fans, who will be making their way to Styria mainly from Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
